Orbital period investigations of two short-period early-type overcontact binaries BH Cen and V701 Sco in two extremely young galactic clusters IC 2944 and NGC 6383
Both V701 Sco and BH Cen are two early-type short-period overcontactsystems (P = 0.d762 and P = 0.d792, respectively).V701 Sco is a member of the young galactic cluster NGC 6383, while BHCen is a component of a younger galactic cluster IC 2944 where starformation is in process. They provide good opportunity to understand theformation and evolution of binary stars. In the present paper, orbitalperiod changes of the two binaries are investigated. It is discoveredthat the orbital period of BH Cen shows a long-term increase with a rateof dP/dt = +1.70(±0.39) × 10‑7 days/yearwhile it undergoes a cyclic oscillation with a period of 44.6 years andan amplitude of A3 = 0.d0216. For V701 Sco, itsO-C curve reveals a periodic change with a period of 41.2 years andamplitude of A3 = 0.d0158. The mass ratio of BHCen is 0.84, but V701 Sco contains twin B1-1.5V type stars with a massratio of unit. The continuous period increase of BH Cen is caused by themass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one ata rate of dM2/dt = 3.5 × 10‑6days/year. The cyclic period changes of both systems can be plausiblyexplained as the results of light-travel time effects suggesting thatthey are triple systems. The astrophysical parameters of the unseentertiary components in the two systems have been determined. We thinkthat the invisible tertiary components in both binaries played animportant role in the formations and evolutions of the overcontactconfigurations by bringing angular momentum out from the centralsystems. For BH Cen, this process created the initial short period andwill support its evolution into an overcontact configuration via a CaseA mass transfer within the life time of the extremely young cluster IC2944. For V701 Sco, two identical zero-age main-sequence components inan overcontact configuration suggest that it may have been formed byfission, possibly by the fission of the third body. The fact that nolong-term continuous period variations were found for V701 Sco maysuggest that an overcontact binary with the mass ratio of unity can bein an equilibrium revealing that the original configuration of thebinary was overcontact as is its present state. It has been reportedthat faint stars in the two extremely young clusters are relativelyscare. From the present study, it is shown that faint stars in youngclusters are usually formed as companions of OB stars (includingbinaries). It is very difficult to detect them because of their lowluminosity when compared with the more luminous OB stars.

Contact Binaries with Additional Components. I. The Extant Data
We have attempted to establish observational evidence for the presenceof distant companions that may have acquired and/or absorbed angularmomentum during the evolution of multiple systems, thus facilitating orenabling the formation of contact binaries. In this preliminaryinvestigation we use several techniques (some of themdistance-independent) and mostly disregard the detection biases ofindividual techniques in an attempt to establish a lower limit to thefrequency of triple systems. While the whole sample of 151 contactbinary stars brighter than Vmax=10 mag gives a firm lowerlimit of 42%+/-5%, the corresponding number for the much better observednorthern-sky subsample is 59%+/-8%. These estimates indicate that mostcontact binary stars exist in multiple systems.

WZ And, a probable contact system with mass ratio very close to unity
We present B and V time-series CCD photometry of the short-periodeclipsing binary WZ And. Eight new epochs of minimum light weredetermined from the observations covering five primary and threesecondary eclipses. Refined period and new ephemeris are given for thesystem based on the photoelectric and CCD photometric times of minimaobtained in the recent 20 years. A period study covering 100 years ornearly 59,000 orbital cycles reveals a cyclic but not periodic behaviorof long-term period variations. Two major period jumps can be indicated.That could be evidence for the existence of a very eccentric third bodyof the eclipsing system. The light curve shows continuous light changesoutside eclipses in both V and B band, indicating that it could be of EWrather EB type. A simultaneous solution of the two light curves wascomputed using the Wilson Devinney code. The solution indicates that WZAnd is in shallow contact with a fill-out factor of ˜6%. Aphotometric mass ratio of q = 1.00 ± 0.01 was derived for thesystem. Discussions on the period behavior and the probable evolutionarystatus of the system suggest that WZ And could very probably be a newlyformed equal-mass contact system.

A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

Astrometric orbits of SB^9 stars
Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) have been used to deriveastrometric orbital elements for spectroscopic binaries from the newlyreleased Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(SB^9). This endeavour is justified by the fact that (i) theastrometric orbital motion is often difficult to detect without theprior knowledge of the spectroscopic orbital elements, and (ii) suchknowledge was not available at the time of the construction of theHipparcos Catalogue for the spectroscopic binaries which were recentlyadded to the SB^9 catalogue. Among the 1374 binaries fromSB^9 which have an HIP entry (excluding binaries with visualcompanions, or DMSA/C in the Double and Multiple Stars Annex), 282 havedetectable orbital astrometric motion (at the 5% significance level).Among those, only 70 have astrometric orbital elements that are reliablydetermined (according to specific statistical tests), and for the firsttime for 20 systems. This represents a 8.5% increase of the number ofastrometric systems with known orbital elements (The Double and MultipleSystems Annex contains 235 of those DMSA/O systems). The detection ofthe astrometric orbital motion when the Hipparcos IAD are supplementedby the spectroscopic orbital elements is close to 100% for binaries withonly one visible component, provided that the period is in the 50-1000 drange and the parallax is >5 mas. This result is an interestingtestbed to guide the choice of algorithms and statistical tests to beused in the search for astrometric binaries during the forthcoming ESAGaia mission. Finally, orbital inclinations provided by the presentanalysis have been used to derive several astrophysical quantities. Forinstance, 29 among the 70 systems with reliable astrometric orbitalelements involve main sequence stars for which the companion mass couldbe derived. Some interesting conclusions may be drawn from this new setof stellar masses, like the enigmatic nature of the companion to theHyades F dwarf HIP 20935. This system has a mass ratio of 0.98 but thecompanion remains elusive.

On the properties of contact binary stars
We have compiled a catalogue of light curve solutions of contact binarystars. It contains the results of 159 light curve solutions. Theproperties of contact binary stars were studied using the cataloguedata. As is well known since Lucy's (\cite{Lucy68a},b) and Mochnacki's(\cite{Mochnacki81}) studies, primary components transfer their ownenergy to the secondary star via the common envelope around the twostars. This transfer was parameterized by a transfer parameter (ratio ofthe observed and intrinsic luminosities of the primary star). We provethat this transfer parameter is a simple function of the mass andluminosity ratios. We introduced a new type of contact binary stars: Hsubtype systems which have a large mass ratio (q>0.72). These systemsshow behaviour in the luminosity ratio- transfer parameter diagram thatis very different from that of other systems and according to ourresults the energy transfer rate is less efficient in them than in othertypes of contact binary stars. We also show that different types ofcontact binaries have well defined locations on the mass ratio -luminosity ratio diagram. Several contact binary systems do not followLucy's relation (L2/L1 =(M2/M1)0.92). The Database ASAS and the Periods of Several Early-Type Binaries
Using the database ASAS, new times of minima are calculated foreclipsing binaries EM Car, SV Cen, AQ Cir, TU Mus, V431 Pup and V701Sco. Periods of these stars are discussed.

Catalogue of the field contact binary stars
A catalogue of 361 galactic contact binaries is presented. Listedcontact binaries are divided into five groups according to the type andquality of the available observations and parameters. For all systemsthe ephemeris for the primary minimum, minimum and maximum visualbrightness and equatorial coordinates are given. If available,photometric elements, (m1+m2)sin3i,spectral type, parallax and magnitude of the O'Connell effect are alsogiven. Photometric data for several systems are augmented by newobservations. The quality of the available data is assessed and systemsrequiring modern light-curve solutions are selected. Selectedstatistical properties of the collected data are discussed.

Analysis of Brightness Variations in the Massive Close Binary System UU Cassiopeia
We derive the parameters of the hot, massive close binary system UU Casfrom earlier and recent photoelectric UBVR observations: M 1 = 34.5Mȯ, M 2 = 25.7M ȯ, A = 69R ȯ, and i=68°; thecomponents' limb darkening coefficients are close to 1. Our fitting ofthe light curves provides evidence for a high degree of over-contact:the components fill their inner critical surfaces by 132% and 100%. Itis possible that the appearance of the light curve is determined notonly by the distorted shapes of the components and their eclipses but,to a considerable extent, by screening by a complex envelope and theenvelope's contribution to the system's total luminosity.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. Stars with the Largest Hipparcos Photometric Amplitudes
A list of the 2027 stars that have the largest photometric amplitudes inHipparcos Photometry shows that most variable stars are all Miras. Thepercentage of variable types change as a function of amplitude. Thiscompilation should also be of value to photometrists looking forrelatively unstudied, but large amplitude stars.

Absolute proper motions of open clusters. I. Observational data
Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determinedfrom their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusterswere searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters withdistances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground basedinformation (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance fromthe cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (propermotion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members werefound. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometricdistances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos dataconfirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studiedclusters. V606 Centauri: an early-type eclipsing contact binary
We present a spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the early-typeeclipsing binary V606 Cen. Based on new high-resolution CCD spectra thefirst radial velocity curve of this system is given, which allows for anaccurate determination of radial velocity amplitudes (K_1=181.8 km s(-1), K_2=345.2 km s(-1) ) and the spectroscopic mass ratio q_spec=0.527.Moreover, equivalent widths are listed. The line strengths of He i 4922show strong variations with the orbital phase, related to the so-called(and hitherto unexplained) ``Struve-Sahade effect". In this context,some aspects concerning the determination of equivalent widths in closebinary systems are discussed, with special reference to the influence ofthe ellipsoidal light variations. For the first time, photoelectric UBVlight curves of V606 Cen are presented, which were solved with the MOROcode, based on the Wilson-Devinney model. The first set of solutions wasachieved with effective temperatures according to the previous spectralclassification B1-2 Ib/IIb, but the derived absolute dimensions, surfacegravities, as well as an investigation of the equivalent widths led to arevision of the spectral type. We now suggest B0-0.5 V for the primary,and B2-3 V for the secondary component, respectively. Using thecorresponding effective temperatures, another light curve analysis wasperformed, yielding the following absolute dimensions: M_1=14.7 M_sun,M_2=8.0 M_sun, R_1=6.8 R_sun, R_2=5.2 R_sun, log L_1/L_sun=4.48, and logL_2/L_sun=3.74. In all cases, a contact configuration is found. Theevolutionary state of V606 Cen is discussed in the light of modernevolutionary grids. It turns out that this contact system was formedduring the slow phase of case A mass transfer after reversal of its massratio. Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The Henry Draper Extension Charts: A catalogue of accurate positions, proper motions, magnitudes and spectral types of 86933 stars
The Henry Draper Extension Charts (HDEC), published in the form offinding charts, provide spectral classification for some 87000 starsmostly between 10th and 11th magnitude. This data, being highlyvaluable, as yet was practically unusable for modern computer-basedastronomy. An earlier pilot project (Roeser et al. 1991) demonstrated apossibility to convert this into a star catalogue, using measurements ofcartesian coordinates of stars on the charts and positions of theAstrographic Catalogue (AC) for subsequent identification. We presenthere a final HDEC catalogue comprising accurate positions, propermotions, magnitudes and spectral classes for 86933 stars of the HenryDraper Extension Charts.

OB-type binaries: Models versus observations
Recently published models on close binary evolution for massive stars (Mgreater than 5 solar mass) are compared to a set of detached andsemidetached OB binaries. For the majority of the detached systems, wefind good correspondence between theoretical and observedcharacteristics for stars with masses between 4.5 sola mass and 17 solarmass. We explore the origin of semidetached systems, and discussanomalies between models and observed characteristics. An initial massratio of around 0.6 seems to be preffered for this group. Finally, webriefly examine a number of massive (marginal) contact systems. Thelatter systems all seem to evolve according to case A of mass transfer.

A photometric study of early-type contact binary CT Tauri
We present a photometric analysis of a short period binary system CTTau. New times of minima indicate no period changes over the last 30years. CT Tau is in a quiet evolutionary phase without any trace of massexchange between components. The photometric solution is also presented.We found a dumbbell-shaped configuration of the system with the fill-outfactor close to unity and mass ratio q = 1. The masses, radii, andtemperatures of two components are identical (log M= 0.60, log R = 0.51,and log T = 4.26) and the system is located at the distance dapproximately equals 1.5 kpc.

An Einstein Observatory SAO-based catalog of B-type stars
About 4000 X-ray images obtained with the Einstein Observatory are usedto measure the 0.16-4.0 keV emission from 1545 B-type SAO stars fallingin the about 10 percent of the sky surveyed with the IPC. Seventy-fourdetected X-ray sources with B-type stars are identified, and it isestimated that no more than 15 can be misidentified. Upper limits to theX-ray emission of the remaining stars are presented. In addition tosummarizing the X-ray measurements and giving other relevant opticaldata, the present extensive catalog discusses the reduction process andanalyzes selection effects associated with both SAO catalog completenessand IPC target selection procedures. It is concluded that X-rayemission, at the level of Lx not less than 10 exp 30 ergs/s, is quitecommon in B stars of early spectral types (B0-B3), regardless ofluminosity class, but that emission, at the same level, becomes lesscommon, or nonexistent, in later B-type stars.

EB-type contact binary DO CAS with a large temperature difference
New UBV photoelectric observations of EB-type contact binary DO Cas weremade on four nights from February 1986 to February 1987. The obtainedlight curves in combination with the radial-velocity curve of theprimary published by Mannino (1958) of DO Cas have been solvedsimultaneously using the Wilson-Devinney synthesis code. The system isfound to be a contact binary with a degree of overcontact of 14 percent.It may be concluded that DO Cas is an evolved contact binary.

Ultraviolet light curves of V535 Arae
The light curve of V535 Ara is determined from observations of thislong-period W UMa binary in the UV, and its gravity darkening isestimated. The UV colors and spectral type correspond to (B - V)0 =0.24, or A8V, and imply that the star should have very little residualconvection in its envelope. It is concluded that the gravity darkeningis large, as in a radiative star, unless it is modified by circulationin the common envelope, or unless all stars this warm are convective.Four solutions are obtained to a combination of optical and UV lightcurves, two for high radiative gravity darkening, and two for lowconvective gravity darkening. The light curves were fitted equally wellin all four cases, while in all but the one with low-gravity darkeningand a hot inner face there was a rather large global temperaturedifference between the two stars. It is suggested that the W UMabinaries are found only at spectral types later than about A8 becausetheir outer envelopes must be convective to transfer luminosity.

Stellar masses and radii based on modern binary data
Accurate data on absolute dimensions of eclipsing binaries published inthe astronomical literature since 1980 are collected and analyzed.Simple approximation formulas relating the effective temperature withother basic physical parameters (mass, radius, bolometric magnitude) arederived. Mean and extreme values of these parameters for each spectraltype are also tabulated. The implication of improved data for theproblem of critical rotational periods and equatorial velocities ofearly-type stars is discussed.

Gravitational radiation and spiralling time of close binary systems. II
Power-output by gravitational radiation (PB) and spiralling time (t0)for individual systems of twelve early (B) type binary systems have beenevaluated. A new relation between ~B and ~ obtained. It is found thatmost of these systems lie in the spiralling time range iO~ years

Angular momenta in binary systems
The correlations of angular momenta L to masses M are studied fordifferent types of spectroscopic binaries. Postulates about equivalentstates of angular momenta for different orbital parameters areintroduced. From comparisons with galaxies and single stars, it isevidenced that there is not a unique universal function L = AM exp b,when the finite structure of the relation is analyzed: each object hasits own coefficients A, b. It seems that there are an upper and a lowerlimit for all the possible functions.

The gravity-darkening of highly distorted stars in close binary systems. VI - Practical analysis of early-type contact systems with spectral types later than B1
The observed ellipticity effect is analyzed to deduce empirical valuesof the exponent of effective gravity-darkening, alpha, for early-typecontact systems with spectral types later than B1 for which the effectof radiation pressure may be neglected. It is found that the alphavalues for all contact systems as a whole increase with the meaneffective temperature of both components. It is shown that the alphavalues increase slightly with the mass ratio in early-type contactsystems, whereas they decrease with mass ratio in W UMa type contactsystems.
