FCAPT uvby Photometry of the mCP Stars HD 20629, HR 3724, 45 Leo, and HD 192678
The Four College Automated Photoelectric Telescope obtained differentialStrömgren uvby observations of the magnetic chemically peculiar(mCP) stars HD 20629, HR 3724, 45 Leo, and HD 192678. HD 20629, amoderately large amplitude variable, has a period of 2.9934 days.Analyses of this new photometry with published uvby values show that HR3724 and 45 Leo had periods of 33.984 and 1.44404 days, respectively, for at least 30 yr. New observations of HD 192678 refine the period ofthis small-amplitude variable to 6.4193 days.

On the behavior of the Cii 4267.261, 6578.052 and 6582.882 Å lines in chemically peculiar and standard stars
With the aim of investigating the possible particular behavior of carbonin a sample of chemically peculiar stars of the main sequence withoutturning to modeling, we performed spectroscopic observations of threeimportant and usually prominent single ionized carbon lines: 4267.261,6578.052 and 6582.882 Å. In addition, we observed a large numberof standard stars in order to define a kind of normality strip, usefulfor comparing the observed trend for the peculiar stars. We paidparticular attention to the problem of the determination of fundamentalatmospheric parameters, especially for the chemically peculiar stars forwhich the abundance anomalies change the flux distribution in such a waythat the classical photometric methods to infer effective temperaturesand gravities parameter cannot be applied. Regarding CP stars, we founda normal carbon abundance in Hg-Mn, Si (with some exceptions) and Hestrong stars. He weak stars are normal too, but with a large spread outof the data around the mean value. A more complicated behavior has beennoted in the group of SrCrEu stars: four out of seven show a strongoverabundance, being the others normal.

Long-term monitoring of active stars. IX. Photometry collected in 1993
As a part of an extensive program focused on the global properties andevolution of active stars, high-precision UBV(RI)_c and UBV photometryof 31 selected stars is presented. The UBV(RI)_c observations werecollected at the European Southern Observatory over the 31 December1992-18 January 1993 and the 20 November-3 December 1993 intervals.Additional UBV photometry obtained by the ``Phoenix" and by the CataniaAstrophysical Observatory Automatic Photoelectric Telescopes from 1990to 1993 is also presented for some of the program stars. Significantevolution of the light curves, period variations and evidence forlong-term variability of the global degree of spottedness are found. Some spectral classifications are revised and the inferred photometricparallaxes are compared, whenever possible, with the values measured bythe Hipparcos satellite. These observations are finalized to theconstruction of an extended photometric database, which can giveimportant clues on topics such as the stability of spotted areas, differential rotation, solar-like cycles and the correlation betweeninhomogeneities at different atmospheric levels. Based on data collectedat the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile. Iron Line Diagnostics of the Postshock Hot Plasma in MagneticCataclysmic Variables Observed with ASCA
The ASCA spectra of ~20 magnetic cataclysmic variables are presented.Owing to the high spectral resolution of the solid-state imagingspectrometer, we successfully resolved the iron Kalpha emission lineinto the fluorescent (6.4 keV) and plasma (6.7 and 7.0 keV) components.By comparing the ionization temperature, which is obtained from theintensity ratio of the plasma line components of iron, with thecontinuum temperature, we have obtained the evidence that the postshockplasma has a temperature distribution. Detailed analysis indicates thatthe observed temperature distribution is consistent with that expectedfrom the postshock plasma model in the bremsstrahlung cooling domain. Inthe framework of this postshock plasma model, we have constrained themass of the white dwarf in totally nine intermediate polars and obtainedthe iron abundances. The obtained masses are generally consistent withthe previous X-ray work. We have found that the iron abundance isgenerally subsolar, and its distribution probably peaks at 0.2-0.6solar. We have also shown that the reflection from the white dwarfsurface makes significant contribution to the observed fluorescent ironKalpha emission line.

On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Some potentially important magnetic CP stars are noted.Tables 1, 2, and 3 are available only in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). Stellar uvbybeta photometry in three EUV shadow directions
We present the uvbybeta data used to locate the dust and derivedistances for nearby diffuse interstellar clouds in the EUV shadowslb27-31, lb165-32 and lb329+46 discovered by the Extreme UltravioletExplorer. The photometrically derived parallaxes of our program starsare compared to the parallaxes listed in the Hipparcos Catalog. Withinthe photometric distance limit of 150 pc, the photometric parallaxes of21 ``normal" stars are consistent with the Hipparcos measurements withinan uncertainty of 15%. Much as expected for the Str{ömgren system.Since all program stars are brighter than V~11.5 most of them areincluded in the Tycho photometry. For our sample of ~ 200 stars we findVby and V_T to be consistent. Few stars are common topublished uvbybeta catalogs, ~ 10, V and the indices compare well apartfrom beta where a zero point difference of 11 mmag is noticed.Tables \ref{tab1}-\ref{tab3} are also available in electronic form atthe CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.htmlBased on observations at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla,Chile.

A spectroscopic study of some suspected chemically peculiar stars
Time-resolved spectra in the 410 - 700 nm range have been obtained toinvestigate 10 stars which are classified as suspected chemicallypeculiar stars in The General Catalogue of Ap and Am stars by Renson etal. (1991) or in the latest literature. Among the studied stars, HD20629presents metal abundances which are significantly different from mainsequence star values and it should be classified as Silicon star. Fromthe Hei587.6 nm line, we conclude that HD35575 is a helium weak star.Because of the found radial velocity variability and the derivedabundances, the periodic photometric variable HD38602 could be anellipsoidal variable.

The observed periods of AP and BP stars
A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light, spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.

Mesures de vitesses radiales. VIII. Accompagnement AU sol DU programme d'observation DU satellite HIPPARCOS
We publish 1879 radial velocities of stars distributed in 105 fields of4^{\circ} \times 4^{\circ}. We continue the PPO series \cite[(Fehrenbachet al. 1987;]{Feh87} \cite[Duflot et al. 1990, 1992 and 1995),]{Du90}using the Fehrenbach objective prism method. UvbyHbeta_ photometry of main sequence A type stars.
We present Stroemgren uvby and Hbeta_ photometry for a set of575 northern main sequence A type stars, most of them belonging to theHipparcos Input Catalogue, with V from 5mag to 10mag and with knownradial velocities. These observations enlarge the catalogue we began tocompile some years ago to more than 1500 stars. Our catalogue includeskinematic and astrophysical data for each star. Our future goal is toperform an accurate analysis of the kinematical behaviour of these starsin the solar neighbourhood.

Photometric and spectroscopic studies of cool stars discovered in EXOSAT X-ray images. III. Photometric properties.
We present high-precision UBV(RI)_c_ photometry for a sample of activestars detected serendipitously by the EXOSAT satellite. Fourteenobjects, out of 47 likely optical counterparts, turned out to be clearlyvariable, with periods in the range 1-8 days, including a newlydiscovered eclipsing binary. For most of them the optical variability isconsistent with the presence of photospheric cool spots. We have usedour multicolour photometry to estimate spectral classifications anddistances. The derived distances indicate that some of the observedstars are previously unidentified nearby (d<=25pc) M dwarfs. Whencombined with the results of high resolution spectroscopy, ourphotometric observations allow us to investigate the stellar content ofthe selected X-ray sample. Young stars and RS CVn-type binaries appearto constitute a large fraction of the selected sample.

Third supplement to the catalogue of observed periods of AP stars
New data on the periods of Ap stars with references are presented.Twelve further stars are introduced for which a periodic variability hasrecently been discovered or not reported in previous issues of thiscatalog. For many stars also present in previous issues of the catalognew determinations of the periods are given. Recently attributedvariable star names are also quoted.

The EXOSAT high Galactic latitude survey
This study presents a survey of serendipitous sources performed in thevery soft X-ray band (0.05-2.0 keV) using the Exosat imaging telescopes. It covers 783 sq deg of high Galactic latitude sky and includes 210serendipitous sources which define a complete (flux-limited) sample. Twohundred of the 210 detected sources are identified via extensive opticaland radio observations together with cross-correlations with catalogs ofknown objects. The log N-log S relation was found to be consistent withthat of the Einstein extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) and withthe 'Euclidean' value of 1.5. The normalization of the relation is astrong function of the assumed spectral slope of AGN. It is inferredfrom the consistency with the EMSS results that the average (energy)slope of extragalactic sources in the soft X-ray band is very steep(approximately 1.5). An analysis of the association between AGNdetection and Galactic N(H) also shows that the average slope is steepand inconsistent with the canonical value of 0.7.
