Spectral Classification of Stars in A Supplement to the Bright Star Catalogue
MK spectral types are given for about 584 stars in A Supplement to theBright Star Catalogue. These are compared with Hipparcos parallaxes tocheck the reliability of those classifications. The estimated errors are+/-1.2 subtypes, and 10% of the luminosity classes may be wrong.

Catalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields. I. Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination ofaveraged quadratic effective magnetic fields < B_e > for 596 mainsequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of thestellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e,which were compiled from the existing literature.We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars inthe catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, andall ApSr type stars. We have found that the number distribution of allchemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength isdescribed by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this typehold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemicalpeculiarity. New periodic variables from the Hipparcos epoch photometry
Two selection statistics are used to extract new candidate periodicvariables from the epoch photometry of the Hipparcos catalogue. Theprimary selection criterion is a signal-to-noise ratio. The dependenceof this statistic on the number of observations is calibrated usingabout 30000 randomly permuted Hipparcos data sets. A significance levelof 0.1 per cent is used to extract a first batch of candidate variables.The second criterion requires that the optimal frequency be unaffectedif the data are de-trended by low-order polynomials. We find 2675 newcandidate periodic variables, of which the majority (2082) are from theHipparcos`unsolved' variables. Potential problems with theinterpretation of the data (e.g. aliasing) are discussed.

On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). The observed periods of AP and BP stars
A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light,spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.

UBV photometry of Be stars at Hvar: 1972--1990
A summary of results of the systematic UBV photoelectric monitoring ofbright northern Be stars carried out at the Hvar Observatory between1972 and 1990 is presented. Altogether, 76 Be stars of all luminosityclasses were observed and 13,848 UBV measurements secured.Simultaneously, 9,648 UBV measurements of 48 check stars (most of themof early spectral types) were obtained. A careful transformation of allobservations into the standard Johnson system allowed detection andmonitoring of even very mild long-term light and colour variations ofthese objects. Almost all early-type Be stars in the sample turned outto be variable. For several stars phase-locked light variations relatedto their binary nature were established. Sudden brightenings, on a timescale of a few days, were detected for o Cas and QR Vul. Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Third supplement to the catalogue of observed periods of AP stars
New data on the periods of Ap stars with references are presented.Twelve further stars are introduced for which a periodic variability hasrecently been discovered or not reported in previous issues of thiscatalog. For many stars also present in previous issues of the catalognew determinations of the periods are given. Recently attributedvariable star names are also quoted.

A study of magnetic fields in AP SI and He weak stars
A survey of 44 Ap and Bp Si and He-weak stars for the presence ofdetectable longitudinal magnetic fields (Be) is reported. Fields havebeen detected in about half of the sample, with typical standard errorsin the range of 100-400 G. In 11 stars, fields have been detected forthe first time. For most of the stars with detected fields, thevariation of Be with rotational phase has been determined at leastapproximately. In a number of cases the phase relationship withphotometric or spectroscopic variations have also been established.Several of the newly detected fields are relatively large, with rmsvalues between 1 and 4 kG, and thus may be especially suitable fordetailed mapping and modelling. A particularly interesting result ofthese observations is the identification of at least four stars in whichextrema of the photometric or spectroscopic variations do not coincidewith the magnetic extrema, which implies that the distribution ofchemical elements over the stellar surface that leads to photometricvariations is definitely not symmetric about the magnetic axis of thestar.

Properties and nature of Be stars. XV - Light variations of LQ And and its check stars revisited
Results of an analysis of 624 UBV observations of LQ And made at sixobservatories between 1980 and 1988 have been used to find a period of0.30952 or 0.61904 days, with a full amplitude of about 0.025 m. Noevidence of multiperiodicity is found, and the only variation other thanthe periodic one at 0.6 or 0.3 days is the suspected decline inbrightness between 1951 and 1988, probably connected with physicalchanges in the Be envelope. A new period of 3.5112 days is derived forLQ And light and color variations, and it is suggested that this hot CPstar is an oblique rotator.

Radial velocity measurements. IV - Ground-based accompaniment to the HIPPARCOS observation program
The paper presents 396 radial velocities of stars distributed in 19fields of 4 x 4 degrees. The study employs the Fehrenbach objectiveprism method and the same measuring technique used in a previous paper(Fehrenbach et al., 1987).

A photometric campaign on the Be stars Omicron And, KX And, KY And, LQ And and EW Lac
Results are presented from a UBV photometric study of five northern Bestars. It is found that the variation of Omicron And, LQ And, andpossibly KX And and EW Lac, is periodic. No periodicity was observed forKY And. The light curves of the stars are discussed. Only two of themodels considered account for the short-term variability observed in thestars. The nonradial pulsator requires special assumptions to explainnonsinusoidal light curves. Also, it is difficult to explain the abruptchange in the light curve of EW Lac with the magnetic oblique rotatormodel.

Is the Be star HR 9070 actually pulsating?
New photometric observations on the short-period Be variable HR 9070 arepresented which show that the light maxima can be predicted by a givenephemeris. Analysis using a 0.3-day period or a double-wave 0.6-dayperiod curve results in the same rms error, hence equal probabilities.Spectrography suggests large RV discontinuities in the components ofH-alpha, superimposed on smooth variations possibly correlated with theshortest period. Depending on the actual solution, pulsation or rotationmay be invoked. The shortest periodic Be stars show periods longer thanthe classical Beta CMa pulsating variables, so unusual pulsation modesshould be considered. If rotation of a star with spots on its surfaceaccounts for the variations, an exclusion mechanism between Beta CMa andBe phenomena must exist, probably as a function of rotation.

Evidence of decay of the magnetic fields of AP stars
Data obtained in the Geneva photometric system (Rufener, 1981) andappropriate calibrations of this system in terms of surface magneticfield and gravity are used to provide, on the basis of 708 field andcluster Ap stars, observational evidence that these stars undergo decayof their magnetic field on an evolutionary timescale. Justifications aregiven for the application of a photometric gravity calibration topeculiar stars. The dependence of the photometrically estimated surfacemagnetic field on gravity is found to differ markedly from availabletheoretical calculations. HgMn stars are found to show the same trend,strengthening the impression that they might be slightly magnetic.He-weak stars do not.

Photometric properties of AP stars in the Geneva system
An examination of the properties in some photometric diagrams of morethan 600 Ap stars measured in the Geneva photometric system confirm thatthe Balmer discontinuity is smaller than for normal stars, along withthe link between a proposed peculiarity parameter and both rotationalvelocity and effective magnetic field. It is shown that the peculiarityparameter is sensitive to interstellar reddening, and it is foundthrough examination of the standard deviations for visual magnitudesthat cool CP 2 stars without Eu peculiarity have the greatestamplitudes. Rapid rotators have a mild peculiarity, while positivecorrelation exists for Si and SrCr stars.
