The calibration of a radio-independent search for BL Lac objects
IIIa-J plates taken with a 1.2-m Schmidt telescope were measured withthe Cosmos machine in a radio-independent search for BL Lac objects, using a linear polarizing filter. About 33,000 objects, covering a 10 sqdeg area, were searched down to a B-value level of about 19.5. Cosmosimage parameters were used to define an algorithm separating stars andgalaxies and excluding merged and unmatched images. Objects wereselected from the plate material according to variability and apolarization detection limit of about 15%. In terms of the knownpolarization properties of BL Lac objects, the search is estimated to beapproximately 15% complete, and surface density limits of 0.9 +0.3-0.9/sq deg, down to a B value of 19.0, have been inferred.
