Searching for links between magnetic fields and stellar evolution. I. A survey of magnetic fields in open cluster A- and B-type stars with FORS1
Context: .About 5% of upper main sequence stars are permeated by astrong magnetic field, the origin of which is still matter of debate. Aims: . With this work we provide observational material to studyhow magnetic fields change with the evolution of stars on the mainsequence, and to constrain theory explaining the presence of magneticfields in A and B-type stars. Methods: . Using FORS1 inspectropolarimetric mode at the ESO VLT, we have carried out a survey ofmagnetic fields in early-type stars belonging to open clusters andassociations of various ages. Results: . We have measured themagnetic field of 235 early-type stars with a typical uncertainty of˜ 100 G. In our sample, 97 stars are Ap or Bp stars. For thesetargets, the median error bar of our field measurements was ˜ 80 G.A field has been detected in about 41 of these stars, 37 of which werenot previously known as magnetic stars. For the 138 normal A and B-typestars, the median error bar was 136 G, and no field was detected in anyof them.

Herbig Ae/Be Stars in nearby OB Associations
We have carried out a study of the early-type stars in nearby OBassociations spanning an age range of ~3-16 Myr, with the aim ofdetermining the fraction of stars that belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class.We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby (<=500 pc) OBassociations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1,with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We also included in ourstudy the early-type stars in the Trumpler 37 cluster, part of the CepOB2 association. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in theseassociations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visualextinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, usingHipparcos photometry. Using colors corrected for reddening, we find thatthe Herbig Ae/Be stars and the classical Be (CBe) stars occupy clearlydifferent regions in the JHK diagram. Thus, we use the location on theJHK diagram, as well as the presence of emission lines and of strong 12μm flux relative to the visual, to identify the Herbig Ae/Be stars inthe associations. We find that the Herbig Ae/Be stars constitute a smallfraction of the early-type stellar population even in the youngerassociations. Comparing the data from associations with different agesand assuming that the near-infrared excess in the Herbig Ae/Be starsarises from optically thick dusty inner disks, we determined theevolution of the inner disk frequency with age. We find that the innerdisk frequency in the age range 3-10 Myr in intermediate-mass stars islower than that in the low-mass stars (<1 Msolar) inparticular, it is a factor of ~10 lower at ~3 Myr. This indicates thatthe timescales for disk evolution are much shorter in theintermediate-mass stars, which could be a consequence of more efficientmechanisms of inner disk dispersal (viscous evolution, dust growth, andsettling toward the midplane).

Catalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields. I. Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination ofaveraged quadratic effective magnetic fields < B_e > for 596 mainsequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of thestellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e,which were compiled from the existing literature.We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars inthe catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, andall ApSr type stars. We have found that the number distribution of allchemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength isdescribed by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this typehold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemicalpeculiarity. Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Photoelectric Photometry of Stars in the Orion Standard Region
Magnitudes and color indices in the Vilnius seven-color photometricsystem are given for 108 stars in the Orion standard region around theOrion Belt and the star lambda Orionis. New spectral and luminosityclasses, estimated from the photometric data, are given for some of thestars.

The λ 3984 feature in late-B spectroscopic binaries.
We report about a spectroscopic study aimed at searching the line Hg IIλ 3984 in a sample of 28 spectroscopic binaries with primaries inthe same temperature range as HgMn stars. One system, HD 75642, showsthis line very prominently. In another system, HD 41040, Hg may besomewhat overabundant, while HD 87751 shows marginal Mn and Penhancement. The present study does not bring a definitive answer to thequestion of the relation between binarity, slow rotation, and theappearance of HgMn anomalies in late B stars, possibly because othereffects (like the influence of a magnetic field), which could not betaken into consideration, are important too. In the course of thisstudy, 11 new double-lined spectroscopic binaries were discovered, 10 ofwhich were previously known as single-lined systems. Of particularinterest among them are 4 stars that may have the Si or He weakpeculiarities.

Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: A field in Orion
Far-ultraviolet photometry for 625 objects in Orion is presented. Thesedata were extracted from electrographic camera images obtained duringsounding rocket flights in 1975 and 1982. The 1975 images were centeredclose to the belt of Orion while the 1982 images were centeredapproximately 9 deg further north. One hundred and fifty stars fell inthe overlapping region and were observed with both cameras. Sixty-eightpercent of the objects were tentatively identified with known starsusing the SIMBAD database while another 24% are blends of objects tooclose together to separate with our resolution. As in previous studies,the majority of the identified ultraviolet sources are early-type stars.However, there are a significant number for which no such identificationwas possible, and we suggest that these are interesting objects whichshould be further investigated. Seven stars were found which were brightin the ultraviolet but faint in the visible. We suggest that some ofthese are nearby white dwarfs.

Spectroscopic binaries in the Orion OB1 association
A radial velocity study of the brighter members of the Ori OB2association is reported. The radial velocity variables, new preliminaryorbital elements for six spectroscopic binaries, and the projected axialrotation in stars for which the orbital elements are lacking arereported. The correlation between the proportion of binaries and theaverage axial rotation for the subgroups of the association isdiscussed. It is found that the Orion main-sequence members rotate atalmost the same rate as field stars of the same types. The averageradial velocity for the whole association is 23 km/s. The percentage ofspectroscopic binaries with periods shorter than 100 days plus themagnetic Ap-Bp among the main-sequence members of the association is 32percent.

Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations
Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.

Photometric variability of AP and He-weak stars in clusters and associations. II
Periods and lightcurves based on data gathered in the Geneva photometricsystem are given for 19 CP2 and CP4 stars belonging to 11 clusters andassociations. In addition, the lightcurve and approximate period isgiven for HD 22114, a field Ap star recently discovered by means ofGeneva photometry. The strange behavior of the star HD 37151 isconfirmed, althouugh it shows only one stable period. A cosinusoid withits first harmonic is fitted to each lightcurve and the covariancematrix of the errors on the fitted parameters is given, as well as theuncertainty on the period. This work confirms that hot magnetic starsundergo no braking of their axial rotation during their main sequencelifetime and that conservation of angular momentum suffices to explainthe slight increase of period with age.

The BP stars in the Orion OB 1 association
For 24 Bp stars in the Ori OB 1 association, 6-m telescope spectrogramsof 9-A/mm dispersion in the 3900-4900 A range yield a quantitativespectral classification, peculiarity type, effective temperature surfacegravity, and rotational velocity. Although Ori OB 1 contains Bp starswith a variety of definite peculiarities, it lacks cool (10,000 K) Apstars, probably because the late-A members have not yet reached thezero-age main sequence.

Evidence of decay of the magnetic fields of AP stars
Data obtained in the Geneva photometric system (Rufener, 1981) andappropriate calibrations of this system in terms of surface magneticfield and gravity are used to provide, on the basis of 708 field andcluster Ap stars, observational evidence that these stars undergo decayof their magnetic field on an evolutionary timescale. Justifications aregiven for the application of a photometric gravity calibration topeculiar stars. The dependence of the photometrically estimated surfacemagnetic field on gravity is found to differ markedly from availabletheoretical calculations. HgMn stars are found to show the same trend,strengthening the impression that they might be slightly magnetic.He-weak stars do not.

Absolute photometry of the southern Orion region in the vacuum ultraviolet (1300-2000 A)
Absolute photometry of the southern Orion region was carried out forfive passbands in the vacuum ultraviolet (1300-2000 A, Delta Lambda = 84A) with a rocket-borne spectrometer. More than 60 early-type stars andthe diffuse background radiation were observed within the raster-scannedfield of 8 x 8 deg centered at alpha = 5 h 30 m and delta = -4 deg.Stellar data suggest a revision of the current absolute scale by 10-30percent, which relatively suppresses the flux toward shorterwavelengths. The present data of the background radiation have thehighest spectral resolution among those published and indicate a steepsystematic increase of the flux toward shorter wavelengths. Directconsequences of the new calibration are briefly discussed.

Photometric properties of AP stars in the Geneva system
An examination of the properties in some photometric diagrams of morethan 600 Ap stars measured in the Geneva photometric system confirm thatthe Balmer discontinuity is smaller than for normal stars, along withthe link between a proposed peculiarity parameter and both rotationalvelocity and effective magnetic field. It is shown that the peculiarityparameter is sensitive to interstellar reddening, and it is foundthrough examination of the standard deviations for visual magnitudesthat cool CP 2 stars without Eu peculiarity have the greatestamplitudes. Rapid rotators have a mild peculiarity, while positivecorrelation exists for Si and SrCr stars.

The rotational velocities of magnetic AP stars
New and existing observations of the rotational velocities of Si-type Apstars in clusters are combined to demonstrate that magnetic stars loseangular momentum after they reach the main sequence. Measurements offield stars provide additional support for this hypothesis. Mechanismsfor magnetic braking are discussed, and it is shown that an interactionof the stellar magnetic field with the interstellar medium can accountfor the observed rate of loss of angular momentum. For Ap stars of later(non-Si) spectral type, it is likely that substantial additionalmagnetic braking takes place during the pre-main-sequence phase ofevolution.

The occurrence of abnormal stars in open clusters
The age dependence of the frequencies of various types of abnormal starsin open clusters and associations is discussed. Spectra acquired atdispersions of 39 A/mm and 129 A/mm were used to determine the spectraltypes and luminosity classes of 661 stars in 14 open clusters andassociations. The frequencies of Ap(Si), Ap(Hg,Mn) and Ap(Sr,Cr) starsare found to increase with age to a level about that of field stars,while the rotational velocities of Ap(Si) and Ap(Hg,Mn) stars decreasewith time. Be stars in clusters exhibit a relatively constant frequency,roughly equal to that of Be field stars. The frequencies of stars withpronounced shell spectra are observed to remain constant with age, whilestars with unusually broad hydrogen lines (Vb stars) occur only in theyoungest clusters. The frequency of Am stars in clusters is notsignificantly different from that of field stars, and does not seem todepend on age, although rotational velocity is seen to decrease. It isconcluded that Ap or Am stars develop from stars of various rotationalspeeds, with a subsequent decrease in rotational velocity.

Spectral types for early-type stars observed by SKYLAB
MK spectral types are presented for 246 early-type stars observed withthe S-019 ultraviolet stellar astronomy experiment on Skylab. K-linetypes are also given where applicable, and various peculiar stars areidentified. The peculiar stars include five silicon stars, a shell star,a helium-rich star, a silicon-strontium star, a chromium-europium star,and two marginal metallic-line stars.

A photometric study of the Orion OB 1 association. I - Observational data.
A catalog of observational data is presented for stars in the region ofthe young stellar association Orion OB 1. Photoelectric observationsobtained in the uvby-beta and UBV systems are compiled along withprevious photoelectric and spectroscopic data for all these stars aswell as for several bright members of the association with availablephotometric indices. Mean weighted values are computed for thephotometric data and summarized in tables expected to be reasonablycomplete for association members earlier than spectral type A0.Membership criteria are derived, and qualitative membershipprobabilities summarized, for the 526 stars in the final program. Theanalytical procedures are discussed for association stars of B,intermediate, and AF types. Effects of the nebular environment andvarious calibrations of Balmer-line and four-color indices areconsidered for the determination of absolute magnitudes for the B-typestars.
