Spectroscopic parameters for 451 stars in the HARPS GTO planet search program. Stellar [Fe/H] and the frequency of exo-Neptunes
To understand the formation and evolution of solar-type stars in thesolar neighborhood, we need to measure their stellar parameters to highaccuracy. We present a catalogue of accurate stellar parameters for 451stars that represent the HARPS Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO)“high precision” sample. Spectroscopic stellar parameterswere measured using high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra acquired with theHARPS spectrograph. The spectroscopic analysis was completed assumingLTE with a grid of Kurucz atmosphere models and the recent ARES code formeasuring line equivalent widths. We show that our results agree wellwith those ones presented in the literature (for stars in common). Wepresent a useful calibration for the effective temperature as a functionof the index color B-V and [Fe/H]. We use our results to study themetallicity-planet correlation, namely for very low mass planets. Theresults presented here suggest that in contrast to their joviancouterparts, neptune-like planets do not form preferentially aroundmetal-rich stars. The ratio of jupiter-to-neptunes is also an increasingfunction of stellar metallicity. These results are discussed in thecontext of the core-accretion model for planet formation.Based on observations collected at La Silla Observatory, ESO, Chile,with the HARPS spectrograph at the 3.6-m telescope (072.C-0488(E)). Chemically Tagging the HR 1614 Moving Group
We present abundances for a sample of F, G, and K dwarfs of the HR 1614moving group based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratiospectra from the Anglo-Australian Telescope UCLES instrument. Our sampleincludes stars from Feltzing and Holmberg, as well as from Eggen.Abundances were derived for Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zr, Ba, Ce,Nd, and Eu. The α, Fe, and Fe-peak element abundances show abimodal distribution, with four stars having solar metallicities, whilethe remaining 14 stars are metal-rich, [Fe/H]>=0.25 dex. However, theabundances of these two groups converge for the heavier n-captureelements. Based on their photometry and kinematics, three of the fourdeviating stars are likely nonmembers or binaries. Although one starcannot be excluded on these grounds, we do expect low-levelcontamination from field stars within the HR 1614 moving group's rangeof magnitude, color, and space velocities. Disregarding these fourstars, the abundance scatter across the group members for all elementsis low. We find that there is an 80% probability that the intrinsicscatter does not exceed the following values: Fe, 0.01 dex; Na, 0.08dex; Mg, 0.02 dex; Al, 0.06 dex; Si, 0.02 dex; Ca, 0.02 dex; Mn, 0.01dex; Ni, 0.01 dex; Zr, 0.03 dex; Ba, 0.03 dex; Ce, 0.04 dex; Nd, 0.01dex; and Eu, 0.02 dex. The homogeneity of the HR 1614 group in age andabundance suggests that it is the remnant of a dispersed star-formingevent. Its kinematical coherence shows that such a dispersing systemneed not be significantly perturbed by external dynamical influencessuch as Galactic spiral structure or giant molecular clouds, at leastover a period of 2 Gyr.

Spectroscopic parameters for a sample of metal-rich solar-type stars
Aims.To date, metallicity is the only parameter of a star that appearsto clearly correlate with the presence of planets and their properties.To check for new correlations between stars and the existence of anorbiting planet, we determine accurate stellar parameters for severalmetal-rich solar-type stars. The purpose is to fill the gap of thecomparison sample presented in previous works in the high metal-contentregime. Methods: .The stellar parameters were determined using anLTE analysis based on equivalent widths (EW) of iron lines and byimposing excitation and ionization equilibrium. We also present a firststep in determining these stellar parameters in an automatic manner byusing the code DAOSPEC for the EW determination. Results:.Accurate stellar parameters and metallicities are obtained for oursample composed of 64 high metal-content stars not known to harbor anyplanet. This sample will in the future give us the possibility of betterexploring the existence of differences in the chemical abundancesbetween planet-host stars and stars without known planets in themetal-rich domain. We also report stellar parameters for some recentlydiscovered planet-host stars. Finally, we present an empiricalcalibration for DAOSPEC based on the comparison between its EWmeasurements and the standard "hand made" measurements for the FEROSsample presented in this paper.

Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample
We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.

Synthetic Lick Indices and Detection of α-enhanced Stars. III. F, G, and K Stars with [Fe/H] > 0.00
A sample of 119 F, G, and K solar neighborhood stars, selected under thecondition [Fe/H]>0.00, is investigated in order to detect which ofthem, if any, present α-enhanced characteristics. According to thekinematics, the sample represents stars of the thin-disk component ofthe Galaxy. The search of α-enhanced characteristics is performedby adopting an already tested procedure that does not require previousknowledge of the stellar main atmospheric parameters. The analysis isbased on the comparison of spectral indices in the Lick IDS system,coming from different observational data sets, with synthetic onescomputed with solar-scaled abundances and with α-elementenhancement. The main result of the analysis is the extreme paucity(likely just one in 119) of α-enhanced stars in our sample, thussuggesting [α/Fe]=0.0 for thin-disk stars with [Fe/H]>0.00.This result, which is in agreement with the standard evolutionarypicture of the disk of the Galaxy, is compared with recent results fromhigh-resolution analysis reported in the literature. The role of theatmospheric parameter assumptions in the analysis of high-resolutionspectroscopic data is discussed, and a possible explanation ofdiscrepant results about α-enhancement for stars with[Fe/H]>0.00 is presented.

Can Life Develop in the Expanded Habitable Zones around Red Giant Stars?
We present some new ideas about the possibility of life developingaround subgiant and red giant stars. Our study concerns the temporalevolution of the habitable zone. The distance between the star and thehabitable zone, as well as its width, increases with time as aconsequence of stellar evolution. The habitable zone moves outward afterthe star leaves the main sequence, sweeping a wider range of distancesfrom the star until the star reaches the tip of the asymptotic giantbranch. Currently there is no clear evidence as to when life actuallyformed on the Earth, but recent isotopic data suggest life existed atleast as early as 7×108 yr after the Earth was formed.Thus, if life could form and evolve over time intervals from5×108 to 109 yr, then there could behabitable planets with life around red giant stars. For a 1Msolar star at the first stages of its post-main-sequenceevolution, the temporal transit of the habitable zone is estimated to beseveral times 109 yr at 2 AU and around 108 yr at9 AU. Under these circumstances life could develop at distances in therange 2-9 AU in the environment of subgiant or giant stars, and in thefar distant future in the environment of our own solar system. After astar completes its first ascent along the red giant branch and the Heflash takes place, there is an additional stable period of quiescent Hecore burning during which there is another opportunity for life todevelop. For a 1 Msolar star there is an additional109 yr with a stable habitable zone in the region from 7 to22 AU. Space astronomy missions, such as proposed for the TerrestrialPlanet Finder (TPF) and Darwin, that focus on searches for signatures oflife on extrasolar planets, should also consider the environments ofsubgiants and red giant stars as potentially interesting sites forunderstanding the development of life. We performed a preliminaryevaluation of the difficulty of interferometric observations of planetsaround red giant stars compared to a main-sequence star environment. Weshow that pathfinder missions for TPF and Darwin, such as Eclipse andFKSI, have sufficient angular resolution and sensitivity to search forhabitable planets around some of the closest evolved stars of thesubgiant and red giant class.

The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Statistical cataloging of archival data for luminosity class IV-V stars. II. The epoch 2001 [Fe/H] catalog
This paper describes the derivation of an updated statistical catalog ofmetallicities. The stars for which those metallicities apply are ofspectral types F, G, and K, and are on or near the main sequence. Theinput data for the catalog are values of [Fe/H] published before 2002February and derived from lines of weak and moderate strength. Theanalyses used to derive the data have been based on one-dimensional LTEmodel atmospheres. Initial adjustments which are applied to the datainclude corrections to a uniform temperature scale which is given in acompanion paper (see Taylor \cite{t02}). After correction, the data aresubjected to a statistical analysis. For each of 941 stars considered,the results of that analysis include a mean value of [Fe/H], an rmserror, an associated number of degrees of freedom, and one or moreidentification numbers for source papers. Statistical cataloging of archival data for luminosity class IV-V stars. I. The epoch 2001 temperature catalog
This paper is one of a pair in which temperatures and metallicitycatalogs for class IV-V stars are considered. The temperature catalogdescribed here is derived from a calibration based on stellar angulardiameters. If published calibrations of this kind are compared by usingcolor-index transformations, temperature-dependent differences among thecalibrations are commonly found. However, such differences are minimizedif attention is restricted to calibrations based on Johnson V-K. Acalibration of this sort from Di Benedetto (\cite{dib98}) is thereforetested and adopted. That calibration is then applied to spectroscopicand photometric data, with the latter predominating. Cousins R-Iphotometry receives special attention because of its high precision andlow metallicity sensitivity. Testing of temperatures derived from thecalibration suggests that their accuracy and precision are satisfactory,though further testing will be warranted as new results appear. Thesetemperatures appear in the catalog as values of theta equiv5040/T(effective). Most of these entries are accompanied by measured orderived values of Cousins R-I. Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

Multiplicity among solar-type stars. III. Statistical properties of the F7-K binaries with periods up to 10 years
Two CORAVEL radial velocity surveys - one among stars in the solarneighbourhood, the other in the Pleiades and in Praesepe - are merged toderive the statistical properties of main-sequence binaries withspectral types F7 to K and with periods up to 10 years. A sample of 89spectroscopic orbits was finally obtained. Among them, 52 relate to afree-of-bias selection of 405 stars (240 field stars and 165 clusterstars). The statistics corrected for selection effects yield thefollowing results: (1) No discrepancy is found between the binariesamong field stars and the binaries in open cluster. The distributions ofmass ratios, of periods, the period-eccentricity diagram and the binaryfrequencies are all within the same error intervals. (2) Thedistribution of mass ratios presents two maxima: a broad peak from q ~0.2 to q ~ 0.7, and a sharp peak for q > 0.8 (twins). Both arepresent among the early-type as well as among the late-type part of thesample, indicating a scale-free formation process. The peak for q >0.8 gradually decreases when long-period binaries are considered.Whatever their periods, the twins have eccentricities significantlylower than the other binaries, confirming a difference in the formationprocesses. Twins could be generated by in situ formation followed byaccretion from a gaseous envelope, whereas binaries with intermediatemass ratios could be formed at wide separations, but they are madecloser by migration led by interactions with a circumbinary disk. (3)The frequency of binaries with P<10 years is about 14%. (4) About0.3% of binaries are expected to appear as false positives in a planetsearch. Therefore, the frequency of planetary systems among stars ispresently 7+4-2%. The extension of thedistribution of mass ratios in the planetary range would result in avery sharp and very high peak, well separated from the binary stars withlow mass ratios. Based on photoelectric radial-velocity measurementscollected at Haute-Provence observatory and on observations made withthe ESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite.

HIPPARCOS age-metallicity relation of the solar neighbourhood disc stars
We derive age-metallicity relations (AMRs) and orbital parameters forthe 1658 solar neighbourhood stars to which accurate distances aremeasured by the HIPPARCOS satellite. The sample stars comprise 1382 thindisc stars, 229 thick disc stars, and 47 halo stars according to theirorbital parameters. We find a considerable scatter for thin disc AMRalong the one-zone Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model. Orbits andmetallicities of thin disc stars show now clear relation each other. Thescatter along the AMR exists even if the stars with the same orbits areselected. We examine simple extension of one-zone GCE models whichaccount for inhomogeneity in the effective yield and inhomogeneous starformation rate in the Galaxy. Both extensions of the one-zone GCE modelcannot account for the scatter in age - [Fe/H] - [Ca/Fe] relationsimultaneously. We conclude, therefore, that the scatter along the thindisc AMR is an essential feature in the formation and evolution of theGalaxy. The AMR for thick disc stars shows that the star formationterminated 8 Gyr ago in the thick disc. As already reported by Grattonet al. (\cite{Gratton_et.al.2000}) and Prochaska et al.(\cite{Prochaska_et.al.2000}), thick disc stars are more Ca-rich thanthin disc stars with the same [Fe/H]. We find that thick disc stars showa vertical abundance gradient. These three facts, the AMR, verticalgradient, and [Ca/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation, support monolithic collapseand/or accretion of satellite dwarf galaxies as likely thick discformation scenarios. A statistical search for supermetallicity in F, G and K stars
High-dispersion and low-resolution data are combined to search forsuper-metal-rich (SMR) FGK stars in the solar neighbourhood and Baade'sWindow. The data are assessed by using statistical analysis, with theirrms errors playing a key role. A star is considered to be SMR if itsvalue of [Fe/H]>+0.2dex, while `borderline' SMR status may beassigned if +0.1<[Fe/H]<=+0.2dex. Borderline SMR status isassigned to μ Leo and three other giants, but no full-fledged SMRgiants are found in either Baade's Window or the solar neighbourhood. Bycontrast, the existence of SMR class IV-V stars turns out to be wellestablished, with values found for [Fe/H] that are as large as ~+0.4dex.It is concluded that this apparent contrast between class IV-V stars andgiants should not be interpreted in astrophysical terms at presentbecause of marked shortcomings in the available data base for giants.Recommendations are made about future research that may cure thisproblem and extend present knowledge about SMR dwarfs.

Infrared Detection of Low-Mass Secondaries in Spectroscopic Binaries
This paper outlines an infrared spectroscopic technique to measure theradial velocities of faint secondaries in known single-lined binaries.The paper presents our H-band observations with the Cryogenic Echelle(CSHELL) and the Phoenix spectrographs and describes detections of threelow-mass secondaries in main-sequence binaries, G147-36, G164-67, and HD144284, with mass ratios of 0.562+/-0.011, 0.423+/-0.042, and0.380+/-0.013, respectively. The latter is one of the smallest massratios derived to date for detached main-sequence stars.

Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations for FGK stars: 2001 edition
The catalogue presented here is a compilation of published atmosphericparameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) obtained from highresolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic observations. This newedition has changed compared to the five previous versions. It is nowrestricted to intermediate and low mass stars (F, G and K stars). Itcontains 6354 determinations of (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) for3356 stars, including 909 stars in 79 stellar systems. The literature iscomplete between January 1980 and December 2000 and includes 378references. The catalogue is made up of two tables, one for field starsand one for stars in galactic associations, open and globular clustersand external galaxies. The catalogue is distributed through the CDSdatabase. Access to the catalogue with cross-identification to othersets of data is also possible with VizieR (Ochsenbein et al.\cite{och00}). Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. The reality of old moving groups - the case of HR 1614. Age, metallicity, and a new extended sample
We prove the existence of the old and metal-rich moving group HR 1614.This is done using the new Hipparcos parallaxes in combination withmetallicities derived from Strömgren photometry, supported bydynamical simulations of the evolution of old moving groups in thegalactic potential. A new selection criterion for this moving group ispresented as well as a new, extended sample of probable member stars. Inparticular we find that the HR 1614 moving group has an age of about 2Gyr (using Bertelli et al. 1994 isochrones) and a [Fe/H] =~ 0.19 +/-0.06 dex. We also revisit and apply our new selection criterion to thesamples in Eggen (1992) and Eggen (1998b). It is found that, whenbinaries and stars with too low metallicity have been removed, 15 of hisstars fulfill our criteria. Based on observations with the ESA Hipparcossatellite.

The Vienna-KPNO search for Doppler-imaging candidate stars. I. A catalog of stellar-activity indicators for 1058 late-type Hipparcos stars
We present the results from a spectroscopic Ca ii H&K survey of 1058late-type stars selected from a color-limited subsample of the Hipparcoscatalog. Out of these 1058 stars, 371 stars were found to showsignificant H&K emission, most of them previously unknown; 23% withstrong emission, 36% with moderate emission, and 41% with weak emission.These spectra are used to determine absolute H&K emission-linefluxes, radial velocities, and equivalent widths of theluminosity-sensitive Sr ii line at 4077 Ä. Red-wavelengthspectroscopic and Strömgren y photometric follow-up observations ofthe 371 stars with H&K emission are used to additionally determinethe absolute Hα -core flux, the lithium abundance from the Li i6708 Å equivalent width, the rotational velocity vsin i, theradial velocity, and the light variations and its periodicity. Thelatter is interpreted as the stellar rotation period due to aninhomogeneous surface brightness distribution. 156 stars were found withphotometric periods between 0.29 and 64 days, 11 additional systemsshowed quasi-periodic variations possibly in excess of ~50 days. Further54 stars had variations but no unique period was found, and four starswere essentially constant. Altogether, 170 new variable stars werediscovered. Additionally, we found 17 new SB1 (plus 16 new candidates)and 19 new SB2 systems, as well as one definite and two possible new SB3systems. Finally, we present a list of 21 stars that we think are mostsuitable candidates for a detailed study with the Doppler-imagingtechnique. The HR 1614 Group and HIPPARCOS Astrometry
The evidence for the existence of the important HR 1614 supercluster andgroup of rare rich CN stars is examined with the use of Hipparcosastrometry. Group membership is supported by Hipparcos parallaxes exceptfor two stars for which available evidence suggests uncertainty in theHipparcos values.

Abundances in metal-rich stars. Detailed abundance analysis of 47 G and K dwarf stars with [Me/H] > 0.10 dex
We have derived elemental abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr,Mn, Fe, Co, Ni as well as for a number of s-elements for 47 G and Kdwarf, with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. The selection of stars was based on theirkinematics as well as on their uvby-beta photometry. One sample of starson rather eccentric orbits traces the chemical evolution interior to thesolar orbit and another, on circular orbits, the evolution around thesolar orbit. A few Extreme Population I stars were included in thelatter sample. The stars have -0.1 dex < [Fe/H] < 0.42 dex. Thespectroscopic [Fe/H] correlate well with the [Me/H] derived fromuvby-beta photometry. We find that the elemental abundances of Mg, Al,Si, Ca, Ti, Cr and Ni all follow [Fe/H]. Our data put furtherconstraints on models of galactic chemical evolution, in particular ofCr, Mn and Co which have not previously been studied for dwarf starswith [Me/H] >0.1 dex. The increase in [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] as afunction of [Fe/H] found previously by \cite[Edvardsson et al.(1993a)]{Edv93} has been confirmed for [Na/Fe]. This upturning relation,and the scatter around it, are shown not to be due to a mixture ofpopulations with different mean distances to the galactic centre. We donot confirm the same trend for aluminium, which is somewhat surprisingsince both these elements are thought to be produced in the sameenvironments in the pre-supernova stars. Nor have we been able to traceany tendency for relative abundances of O, Si, and Ti relative to Fe tovary with the stellar velocities, i.e. the stars present mean distanceto the galactic centre. These results imply that there is no significantdifference in the chemical evolution of the different stellarpopulations for stars with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. We find that [O/Fe]continue to decline with increasing [Fe/H] and that oxygen and europiumcorrelate well. However [Si/Fe] and [Ca/Fe] seem to stay constant. Areal (``cosmic'') scatter in [Ti/Fe] at given [Fe/H] is suggested aswell as a decreasing abundance of the s-elements relative to iron forthe most metal-rich dwarf stars. We discuss our results in the contextof recent models of galactic chemical evolution. In our sample we haveincluded a few very metal rich stars, sometimes called SMR (super metalrich) stars. We find these stars to be among the most iron-rich in oursample but far from as metal-rich as indicated by their photometricmetallicities. SMR stars on highly eccentric orbits, alleged to tracethe evolution of the chemical evolution in the galactic Bulge, havepreviously been found overabundant in O, Mg and Si. We have includedthree such stars from the study by \cite[Barbuy & Grenon(1990)]{Bar90}. We find them to be less metal rich and the otherelemental abundances remain puzzling. Detailed spectroscopic abundanceanalyses of K dwarf stars are rare. Our study includes 5 K dwarf starsand has revealed what appears to be a striking example ofoverionization. The overionization is especially prominent for Ca, Crand Fe. The origin of this apparent overionization is not clear and wediscuss different explanations in some detail. Stellar kinematics in the solar neighbourhood and the disc scale lengths of the Galaxy.
A general dynamically consistent 2D flat distribution function is builtto model the kinematics of neighbouring stars. Application leads to themeasurement of a short galactic scale length Rrho_ between1.7 and 2.9kpc and a locally decreasing rotation curve. This is inagreement with recent determinations based on kinematics and counts ofdistant stars. These results rule out the classical assumption that2Rrho_=Rsigma_ or that σ_z_(R)/σ_R_(R)is constant when the vertical scale height h_z_(R) is assumed to beconstant. We explain why the measured squared axis ratio of the velocitydispersions σ_v_^2^/σ_u_^2^ of disc stars is less than 1/2.This ratio has been claimed to be important evidence for thenon-axisymmetry of the galactic disc. We show that this is not the caseand that it may be simply explained with a realistic axisymmetric discmodel if the circular velocity is locally declining or if there is amismatch between the photometric and kinematic scale lengths.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Multiplicity among solar-type stars in the solar neighbourhood. II - Distribution of the orbital elements in an unbiased sample
An unbiased sample of 164 primary G-dwarf stars in the solarneighborhood are studied with the aid of 4200 radial velocities obtainedduring almost 13 yrs. Several present-day distributions of the orbitalelements are derived. For systems with M(2)/M(1) above 0.1 in the nearbyG-dwarf sample, the following results are obtained: (1) The orbitalperiod distribution is unimodal and can be approximated by aGaussian-type relation with a median period of 180 yrs. (2) The shortbinaries are circularized up to orbital periods of about 11 d due to thetidal evolution effects - a result compatible with the mean age of theGalactic disk. (3) The tight binaries not affected by tidal effects (inthe range between 11 and 1000 d) may reflect the initial binaryformation process, and they have a mean eccentricity of 0.31 +/-0.04.For systems with M(2)/M(1) not greater than 0.1, the proportion of browndwarf companions among the IAU velocity standards is estimated at 10percent of the primaries, a value in good agreement with that found inthe G-dwarf sample.

Multiplicity among solar type stars in the solar neighbourhood. I - CORAVEL radial velocity observations of 291 stars
Results obtained on stellar radial velocity of 291 stars of spectraltypes FO to G9, measured with CORAVEL spectrometers at theHaute-Provence and la Silla Observatories, are discussed. The paperdescribes the observational procedure, reduction technique, andvelocity-data calibration and presents a list of individualradial-velocity measurements. Few histograms describing the survey arealso presented.

BVRI photometry of the Gliese Catalogue stars
Photoelectri BVRI photometry on the Cousins (Kron-Cape) system has beenobtained for many of the southern faint stars in the Gliese Catalog(1969). This extends the work of Cousins (1980) and provides a uniformset of data for the nearby stars. Several red dwarfs are noted, whichwere used to define the red end of the Cousins system.

The stellar mass function at low luminosities
The most recent studies of the stellar luminosity function have beencombined to derive the mass function for stars in the mass range lessthan 1.0 and greater than l0.08 solar mass. The analysis shows theimportance of using bolometric magnitudes in investigations of cool,late-type stars. The well-established 'Wielen dip' at M(V) approximatelyequal to + 7 carries over into the bolometric function, which peaks atMbol approximately equal to + 9.5. However, evidence is also found for asecond minimum at Mbol approximately equal to + 12.5 and a subsequentrise to fainter luminosities. The stellar mass-luminosity relation ispoorly defined at these luminosities, but the continuity of the HRdiagram provides a strong argument that none of the isolatedlow-luminosity stars found to date are brown dwarfs. Under thisinterpretation, the observed mass density locally is about 0.09 solarmass per cu pc and the missing mass remains unfound.
