The Nainital-Cape Survey. II. Report for pulsation in five chemically peculiar A-type stars and presentation of 140 null results
Aims.We search for photometric variability in chemically peculiar A typestars in the northern hemisphere. Methods: .High-speed photometricobservations of Ap and Am star candidates have been carried out fromARIES (Manora Peak, Nainital) using a three-channel fast photometerattached to the ARIES 104-cm Sampurnanand telescope. Results:.This paper presents three new variables: HD 113878, HD 118660 and HD207561. During the time span of the survey (1999 December to 2004January) pulsations of the δ Sct type were also found for the twoevolved Am stars HD 102480 and HD 98851, as reported in Joshi et al.(2002, 2003). Additionally, we present 140 null results of the surveyfor this time span. Conclusions: .The star HD 113878 pulsates witha period of 2.31 h, which is typical of δ Sct stars. HD 118660exhibits multi-periodic variability with a prominent period of nearly 1h. These periods need to be investigated and make HD 118660 aparticularly interesting target for further observations. For HD 207561,a star classified as Am, a probable pulsation with a period of 6 min wasfound in the light curves obtained on two consecutive nights. Both HD102480 and HD 98851 exhibit unusual alternating high and low amplitudemaxima, with a period ratio of 2:1. The analysis of the null resultsconfirms the photometric quality of the Nainital site.
| HD 8801: A Unique Single Am Star with γ Doradus and δ Scuti Pulsations
We have discovered the first example of a star pulsating intrinsicallywith both γ Doradus and δ Scuti frequencies. The star, HD8801, is an Am metallic-line star that appears to be single. Since thevast majority of Am stars are members of binary systems with periodsless than 1000 days and also do not pulsate, HD 8801 possesses a veryunusual, if not unique, combination of physical properties. Ourphotometry, acquired with an automatic telescope at FairbornObservatory, resolves six independent pulsation periods between 0.048and 0.404 days. The two longest periods lie within the range of γDor variables, while the four shorter periods are within the range ofδ Sct stars. Eleven radial velocities, obtained over an 11 monthperiod, have a mean of 0.8+/-0.3 km s-1, providing noevidence for a spectroscopic companion. The star is on the main sequenceand lies within both the γ Dor and δ Sct instability strips.Pulsation constants computed for the six periods agree with pulsationconstants computed for other γ Dor and δ Sct variables. HD8801 is also the first confirmed case of a metallic-line star pulsatingwith γ Dor frequencies. Its projected rotational velocity of 55 kms-1 is typical for Am stars, which, as a group, rotate moreslowly than normal A stars. HD 8801's slow rotation compared to normal Astars does not appear to arise from either a binary companion orevolutionary expansion and thus remains a puzzle. The coexistence ofmetallicism and pulsation in several main-sequence stars near the rededge of the δ Sct strip contradicts recent models that predictpulsations only in more evolved stars.

| delta Scuti and related stars: Analysis of the R00 Catalogue
We present a comprehensive analysis of the properties of the pulsatingdelta Scuti and related variables based mainly on the content of therecently published catalogue by Rodríguez et al.(\cite{retal00a}, hereafter R00). In particular, the primaryobservational properties such as visual amplitude, period and visualmagnitude and the contributions from the Hipparcos, OGLE and MACHOlong-term monitoring projects are examined. The membership of thesevariables in open clusters and multiple systems is also analyzed, withspecial attention given to the delta Scuti pulsators situated ineclipsing binary systems. The location of the delta Scuti variables inthe H-R diagram is discussed on the basis of HIPPARCOS parallaxes anduvbybeta photometry. New borders of the classical instability arepresented. In particular, the properties of the delta Scuti pulsatorswith nonsolar surface abundances (SX Phe, lambda Boo, rho Pup, delta Deland classical Am stars subgroups) are examined. The Hipparcos parallaxesshow that the available photometric uvbybeta absolute magnitudecalibrations by Crawford can be applied correctly to delta Scutivariables rotating faster than v sin i ~ 100 km s{-1} withnormal spectra. It is shown that systematic deviations exist for thephotometrically determined absolute magnitudes, which correlate with vsin i and delta m1. The photometric calibrations are found tofit the lambda Boo stars, but should not be used for the group ofevolved metallic-line A stars. The related gamma Dor variables and thepre-main-sequence delta Scuti variables are also discussed. Finally, thevariables catalogued with periods longer than 0fd 25 are examined on astar-by-star basis in order to assign them to the proper delta Scuti, RRLyrae or gamma Dor class. A search for massive, long-period delta Scutistars similar to the triple-mode variable AC And is also carried out.
| Pulsation behavior of classical Am star 60 Tauri
Five nights photoelectric photometric observations through v and y bandsconfirm the pulsation of classical Am δ Scuti variable 60 Tau.Power spectrum of light curves shows multi-period pulsation behavior of60 Tau and two pulsation modes f1=13.0364 andf2=11.8521 cycles per day are definitely identified.Classical Am star 60 Tau is a complicated pulsation δ Scutivariable. Considering the pulsation constant Q, 60 Tau is identified tobe low overtone f or p1 modes tendentiously.
| A revised catalogue of delta Sct stars
An extensive and up-dated list of delta Sct stars is presented here.More than 500 papers, published during the last few years, have beenrevised and 341 new variables have been added to our last list, sixyears ago. This catalogue is intended to be a comprehensive review onthe observational characteristics of all the delta Sct stars known untilnow, including stars contained in earlier catalogues together with othernew discovered variables, covering information published until January2000. In summary, 636 variables, 1149 references and 182 individualnotes are presented in this new list. | Observing roAp Stars with WET: A Primer
We give an extensive primer on roAp stars -- introducing them, puttingthem in context and explaining terminology and jargon, and giving athorough discussion of what is known and not known about them. Thisprovides a good understanding of the kind of science WET could extractfrom these stars. We also discuss the many potential pitfalls andproblems in high-precision photometry. Finally, we suggest a WETcampaign for the roAp star HR 1217.

| Metallicism and pulsation: the discovery of large-amplitude delta Scuti pulsation in a high-metallicity rho Puppis star, HD 40765
We have discovered that HD 40765 is a singly periodic delta Scuti starpulsating in the fundamental or first overtone radial mode with a periodof 4.070h. Its light variations are non-sinusoidal and have peak-to-peakamplitudes of DeltaB=0.21 mag and DeltaV=0.15 mag. This star is stronglymetallic-lined. We classify the spectrum Fmp (kA7hF5mF5), where the `p'does not indicate peculiar in the Ap sense, but peculiar in the sensethat the spectrum cannot be fully parametrized. HD 40765 is alarge-amplitude delta Scuti star which is also a rho Puppis, or evolvedAm, star. By comparison with rho Puppis itself, the inferred surfaceradial velocity variations are 14 km s^-1 peak-to-peak. This implieseither (1) that such pulsation can be non-turbulent at the level ofpredicted diffusion velocities of order cm s^-1, or (2) that diffusionshould be reconsidered as the sole explanation for the abundanceanomalies in this star.
| SANTIAGO 91, a right ascension catalogue of 3387 stars (equinox J2000).
The positions in right ascension of 3387 stars belonging to the Santiago67 Catalogue, observed with the Repsold Meridian Circle at Cerro Calan,National Astronomical Observatory, during the period 1989 to 1994, aregiven. The average mean square error of a position, for the wholeCatalogue, is +/-0.009 s. The mean epoch of the catalogue is 1991.84.
| A catalogue of variable stars in the lower instability strip.
Identifications, positions, photometry, spectra, some pulsationalfeatures, other astrophysical parameters and literature for 302pulsating variable stars in the lower instability strip, near the ZAMS,are given. About 185 stars have near homogeneous photometric informationin the Stroemgren's uvby-β photometric system. Thiscatalogue/database covers information published until November 1993.
| δ Scuti stars: a new revised list
An extensive and up to date list of δ Sct stars is presented. Thiscatalogue is intended to be a comprehensive review of observationalcharacteristics of all the δ Sct stars known until now, includingstars contained in earlier catalogues together with other new discoveredvariables, covering information published until November 1993. Globalinformation in the form of histograms and diagrams are also shown.
| Catalogue of CP stars with references to short time scale variability
A catalogue was compiled which contains all references in the literaturesince 1962 related to variations of CP stars on time scales shorter thanthe rotation period. The role of this catalogue lies in the unbiasedlisting of all available references, and not in a critical evaluation.
| The Cape rapidly oscillating AP star survey. I - First results
The first results of a systematic survey of the roAp phenomenon in thesouthern hemisphere are presented. Consideration is given to surveycandidates from the 464 Ap SrCrEu stars listed in the four currentlyavailable volumes of the Michigan Spectral Catalogue (1978), which coverall the HD stars in the southern sky up to delta = -12 deg. Spectra andlight curves are presented for five new rapidly oscillating Ap starsdiscovered on 10 photometric nights spanning one month. Of particularinterest is star HD 190290, because it appears to be a multimodepulsator somewhat akin to HR 1217 (which has a rich p-mode spectrum).

| Metallicism and pulsation - The discovery of Delta Scuti variability in a classical AM star, HD 1097
HD 1097 is classified as A3/5mF0-F5 which makes it an extreme example ofa classical Am star. The weakness of the Ca II K-line argues that it isan Am and not an Ap star. This paper presents the discovery of lightvariability in HD 1097 with a period of 81.17 + or - 0.05 min and asemiamplitude through a Johnson B filter of 4.52 + or - 0.16 mmag. Forthe T(eff) and presumed luminosity of HD 1097, this period is consistentwith fundamental or first overtone pulsation. HD 1097 is thus both aclassical Am star and a Delta Scuti variable. If diffusion is thecorrect explanation for the abundance anomalies in the Am stars, thenthere must be sufficient residual helium left in the He II ionizationzone to drive small-amplitude pulsation. This pulsation must notgenerate turbulence with velocities greater than a very small fractionof a cm/s. The expected pulsation velocity at the surface of HD 1097 isa few hundred m/s.
| The South Galactic Pole - Results from uvby-beta photometry of 572 O-F stars
Photometric observations on the uvby-beta system are presented for 572O-F stars within about 20 deg of the South Galactic Pole. Theinterstellar extinction near the pole is found to be zero out to 400 pcfrom the sun, in agreement with the H I maps of Burstein and Heiles(1982). Several evolved and Population II objects are identified.
| Interstellar reddening towards the south galactic pole
B, A and F type stars are observed in an area of about 400 squaredegrees around the galactic south pole (SGP) using theStroemgren-Crawford uvby-beta system at the 60 cm telescope of theBochum station on La Silla, Chile. With calibrations for B and F typestars and the provisional calibration for the stars of Stroemgren's LateGroup-A-stars, intrinsic (b-y)0 colors are derived and then used todescribe the interstellar absorption structure of the SGP. To determinethe galactic extinction perpendicular to the galactic plane, thereddening values of distant stars are averaged in order to include boththe reddened and unreddened areas at the SGP. A mean value E(b-y)SGPequals 0.019 m is derived and is found to agree well with earliervalues, except with that of Knude (1977). Explanations for the deviationare considered, implying that Knude's value is systematically too high.
