CCD astrometry and components instrumental magnitude difference of 432 Hipparcos wide visual double stars
Context: We measured the angular separations, position angles, ΔV, Δ y and Δ I of wide visual double stars during the period2003-2005. At least one component of the double stars in our sample hasan entry in the Hipparcos catalogue. Aims: Our measurements are acontribution to the study of the nature of these double stars. Methods: The northern double stars of the project were observed with the1.2 m telescope of the Kryonerion observatory and the southern with the1.0 m SAAO. We performed multiple-exposure CCD imaging of our targetsand used the standard procedure of data reduction and astrometric CCDcalibrations. Results: We present measurements of 213 northern and 219southern wide binaries.Based on observations made at Kryonerion Observatory of the NationalObservatory of Athens, Greece, and the South African AstronomicalObservatory. Full Table 1 and Tables 2, 3 are only available inelectronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr(130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/472/1055

Photographic observations of visual double stars
The photographic observations of 72 visual double stars are presented. The observations were made in the years 1992-1997 with the 60-cm doublerefractor of the Bosscha Observatory at Lembang. Table 1 is onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

A catalog of K giants at the South Galactic Pole - Broadband and DDO photometry and radial velocities
We describe a sample of K giants at the South Galactic Pole, selected toexamine the chemical and kinematical properties of stars perpendicularto the galactic plane and to measure the local column density of thedisk. We report velocities, abundances, absolute magnitudes, andbroadband BV photometry for over 500 giants.

G. P. Kuiper's spectral classifications of proper-motion stars
Spectral classifications are listed for over 3200 stars, mainly of largeproper motion, observed and classified by Kuiper during the years1937-1944 at the Yerkes and McDonald Observatories. While Kuiper himselfpublished many of his types, and while improved classifications are nowavailable for many of these stars, much of value remains. For many ofthe objects, no other spectral data exist.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
Photographic observations of 238 pairs of visual binaries obtained on770 plates using the 60-cm visual refractor of Bosscha Observatory(Lembang, Java) during 1976-1979 are reported, continuing the catalog ofvan Albada-van Dien (1983). The data-reduction procedures are brieflydescribed, and the data are presented in a table.

A kinematic and abundance survey at the galactic poles
The DDO intermediate band system is used to obtain detailed informationabout abundance gradients and velocity dispersions in the galaxy, withan emphasis on the properties of halo stars in the range of from 1 to 5kpc. The DDO abundance index is calibrated agianst (Fe/H) for metal-poorstars, with a resulting gradient of about -0.2 per kpc. However, whenthe sample is divided into two subsamples with (Fe/H) less than -0.5 andequal to or greater than -0.5, the gradients are -0.14 and 0.00,respectively. DDO observations of about 1000 stars, mostly G5-K5 giants, show that the velocity dispersion increases both with decrease inmetallicity and increase in z distance. The abundances found for high-zstars are similar to the A-star results of Rodgers (1971) in that abouthalf the K giants above 1 kpc appear to have solar abundances.

Uvby-beta photometry of visual double stars - Absolute magnitudes of intrinsically bright stars
Individual absolute visual magnitudes M(v) are derived for intrinsicallybright stars and evolved stars. The results are collected for 106objects believed to be members of binary systems. uvby-beta photometrywas empirically calibrated in terms of M(v) for main sequence stars andphotoelectrically determined apparent magnitudes. The derived M(v)values are not significantly different from those stated in the Wilsoncatalogue (1976). Binary systems with main sequence primaries andsecondary components off the main sequence were also investigated.Several systems in which at least one component may be in the pre-mainsequence contraction stage are pointed out. A wide variety of commentsand derived data are given individually for 136 double stars, includingmetallicities, distance moduli, and masses.

The K-giant population at the South Galactic Pole
CN anomalies and distances from the galactic plane have been derivedthrough DDO photometry for 171 late-type giant and subgiant stars nearthe South Galactic Pole. The previously found trend of the difference inCN concentration with distance (approximately equal to 0.09/kpc) holdsto approximately 2 kpc, but at greater distances from the plane theslope becomes approximately zero. The giants beyond 2 kpc are ofessentially normal composition or only slightly underabundant in heavierelements.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
Mean positions, the corresponding epochs, relative separations, positionangles, and mean errors are presented for 95 pairs of visual doublestars, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. The results were obtained bymeasuring plates taken with the 60-cm visual refractor of BosschaObservatory, Lembang, Indonesia, over a 16-yr period. The reductionmethod used in determining the mean positions, epochs, and errors isdiscussed.
