Effective temperature scale and bolometric corrections from 2MASS photometry
We present a method to determine effective temperatures, angularsemi-diameters and bolometric corrections for population I and II FGKtype stars based on V and 2MASS IR photometry. Accurate calibration isaccomplished by using a sample of solar analogues, whose averagetemperature is assumed to be equal to the solar effective temperature of5777 K. By taking into account all possible sources of error we estimateassociated uncertainties to better than 1% in effective temperature andin the range 1.0-2.5% in angular semi-diameter for unreddened stars.Comparison of our new temperatures with other determinations extractedfrom the literature indicates, in general, remarkably good agreement. These results suggest that the effective temperaure scale of FGK starsis currently established with an accuracy better than 0.5%-1%. Theapplication of the method to a sample of 10 999 dwarfs in the Hipparcoscatalogue allows us to define temperature and bolometric correction (Kband) calibrations as a function of (V-K), [m/H] and log g. Bolometriccorrections in the V and K bands as a function of T_eff, [m/H] and log gare also given. We provide effective temperatures, angularsemi-diameters, radii and bolometric corrections in the V and K bandsfor the 10 999 FGK stars in our sample with the correspondinguncertainties.

Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G and K type stars. I - The dwarfs
Four-color, H-beta, and (R,I) photometry for the little-evolvedmain-sequence stars from the Bright Star Catalogue, South Galactic Pole,Griffin (1971), and Moore-Paddock-Wayman (Moore and Paddock 1950, andWayman 1960) samples are analyzed. The luminosity and heavy-elementabundances for these stars are calculated in terms of the Hyadessupercluster, the Wolf 630 group, the Sirius supercluster, and theKapteyn star group. The data reveal the presence of a metal-abundancedependent discontinuity near M(v) = +7 mag in the photometric parametersof dwarfs. The distributions of the abundances and the space motions ofthe sample stars are discussed.

An analysis of the radial-velocity performance of the image-tube spectrograph on the CTIO 1-meter telescope
An analysis of the radial-velocity performance of the 120 A/mmconfiguration of the image-tube spectrograph on the CTIO/Yale 1-metertelescope is presented. The instrument is found to be stable within agiven run but to be susceptible to small changes from run to run. Theremay be systematic changes in velocity residual with declination; noneare found with zenith angle or hour angle. A typical precision of plusor minus 10 km/sec for a single spectrum of a Population I star isachieved for the spectrograph configuration. Rest wavelengths derivedfor F0-K4 Population I stars observed with this spectrograph/image-tubeconfiguration are presented. A table of radial velocities and residualsfor IAU radial-velocity standard stars, as well as some other brightstars, is also presented.

The South Galactic Pole - Results from uvby-beta photometry of 572 O-F stars
Photometric observations on the uvby-beta system are presented for 572O-F stars within about 20 deg of the South Galactic Pole. Theinterstellar extinction near the pole is found to be zero out to 400 pcfrom the sun, in agreement with the H I maps of Burstein and Heiles(1982). Several evolved and Population II objects are identified.
