The multiplicity of planet host stars - new low-mass companions to planet host stars
We present new results from our ongoing multiplicity study of exoplanethost stars, carried out with the infrared camera SofI (Son of ISAAC) atEuropean Southern Observatory-New Technology Telescope (ESO-NTT). Wehave identified new low-mass companions to the planet host starsHD101930 and HD65216. HD101930AB is a wide binary system composed of theplanet host star HD101930A and its companion HD101930B which is a M0 toM1 dwarf with a mass of about 0.7 Msolar separated from theprimary by ~73arcsec (2200au projected separation). HD65216 forms ahierarchical triple system, with a projected separation of 253au(angular separation of about 7arcsec) between the planet host starHD65216A and its close binary companion HD65216BC, whose two componentsare separated by only ~0.17arcsec (6au of projected separation). TwoVLT-NACO images separated by 3yr confirm that this system is comoving to theplanet host star. The infrared photometry of HD65216B and C isconsistent with a M7 to M8 (0.089 Msolar) and a L2 to L3dwarf (0.078 Msolar), respectively, both close to thesubstellar limit. An infrared spectrum with VLT-Infrared Spectrometerand Array Camera (VLT-ISAAC) of the pair HD65216BC, even though notresolved spatially, confirms this late spectral type. Furthermore, wepresent H- and K-band ISAAC infrared spectra of HD16141B, the recentlydetected comoving companion of the planet host star HD16141A. Theinfrared spectroscopy as well as the apparent infrared photometry ofHD16141B are both fully consistent with a M2 to M3 dwarf located at thedistance of the planet host star.Based on observations obtained on La Silla in ESO programs075.C-0098(A), 077.C-0572(A) and 078.C-0376(A), as well as on Paranal inESO programs 070.C-0557(A), 076.C-0057(A) and 078.C-0376(B).E-mail: markus@astro.uni-jena.de

The Carina Spiral Feature: Strömgren-Hβ photometry approach. I. The photometric data-base
A data-base collating all uvbybeta photometry available at present forO-B9 stars brighter than 10th visual magnitude in the field of theCarina Spiral Feature is presented. The completeness and homogeneity ofthe data-base are discussed.Based on CDS data.Table 1 is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/410/523

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Snapshot Survey of O VI Variability in the Winds of 66 OB-Type Stars
We have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to conduct asnapshot survey of O VI variability in the winds of 66 OB-type stars inthe Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. These time series consist of twoor three observations separated by intervals ranging from a few days toseveral months. Although these time series provide the bare minimum ofinformation required to detect variations, this survey demonstrates thatthe O VI doublet in the winds of OB-type stars is variable on variousscales in both time and velocity. For spectral types from O3 to B1, 64%vary in time. At spectral types later than B1, no wind variability isobserved. In view of the limitations of this survey, this fractionrepresents a lower limit on the true incidence of variability in the OVI wind lines, which is very common and probably ubiquitous. Incontrast, for S IV and P V, only a small percentage of the whole sampleshows wind variations, although this may be principally due to selectioneffects. The observed variations extend over several hundreds ofkilometers per second of the wind profile and can be strong. The widthover which the wind O VI profile varies is only weakly correlated withthe terminal velocity (v&infy;), but a significantcorrelation (close to a 1:1 relationship) is derived between the maximumvelocity of the variation and v&infy;. High-velocity O VIwind absorption features (possibly related to the discrete absorptioncomponents seen in other wind lines) are also observed in 46% of thecases for spectral types from O3 to B0.5. These features are variable, but the nature of their propagation cannot be determined from thissurvey. If X-rays can produce sufficient O VI by Auger ionization of OIV and the X-rays originate from strong shocks in the wind, this studysuggests that stronger shocks occur more frequently nearv&infy;, causing an enhancement of O VI nearv&infy;.

The Influence of Stellar Wind Variability on Measurements of Interstellar O VI along Sight Lines to Early-Type Stars
A primary goal of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer mission isto understand the origin of the O VI ion in the interstellar medium ofthe Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Along sight lines to OB-typestars, these interstellar components are usually blended with O VIstellar wind profiles, which frequently vary in shape. In order toassess the effects of this time-dependent blending on measurements ofthe interstellar O VI lines, we have undertaken a minisurvey of repeatedobservations toward OB-type stars in the Galaxy and the Large MagellanicCloud. These sparse time series, which consist of two to threeobservations separated by intervals ranging from a few days to severalmonths, show that wind variability occurs commonly in O VI (~60% of asample of 50 stars), as indeed it does in other resonance lines. However, in the interstellar O VI λ1032 region, the O VIλ1038 wind varies only in ~30% of the cases. By examining casesexhibiting large amplitude variations, we conclude that stellar windvariability generally introduces negligible uncertainty for singleinterstellar O VI components along Galactic lines of sight but canresult in substantial errors in measurements of broader components orblends of components like those typically observed toward stars in theLarge Magellanic Cloud. Due to possible contamination by discreteabsorption components in the stellar O VI line, stars with terminalvelocities greater than or equal to the doublet separation (1654 kms-1) should be treated with care.

Observations of OB-stars at the former Leiden Southern Station
About 700 stars, mostly OB-stars, were observed by the author at theformer Leiden Southern Station at Hartebeespoortdam, South Africa, inthe observing seasons 1965, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1977, 1978. Observationswere made in the five channels of the Walraven photometric system. Dueto weathering of the telescope mirror the W channel gave no reliableresults for the faintest stars (m = 11 mag); in these cases the U-Wcolour index is not given. The change in sensitivity in the V channel, supposedly having occurred in 1968, was not recognised. UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

Stromgren and Hβ photometry of OB stars in the region of the Carina Spiral Feature
Stromgren and Hβ photometry of 130 stars in the Carina section ofthe Milky Way is presented. The color excesses and the distances of allstars are obtained. A good agreement is found between the CM and HRdiagrams and the spatial distribution of these stars. Tables 1, 2, 4 and5 are only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to130.79.128.5 or via http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars
A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.

An Einstein Observatory SAO-based catalog of B-type stars
About 4000 X-ray images obtained with the Einstein Observatory are usedto measure the 0.16-4.0 keV emission from 1545 B-type SAO stars fallingin the about 10 percent of the sky surveyed with the IPC. Seventy-fourdetected X-ray sources with B-type stars are identified, and it isestimated that no more than 15 can be misidentified. Upper limits to theX-ray emission of the remaining stars are presented. In addition tosummarizing the X-ray measurements and giving other relevant opticaldata, the present extensive catalog discusses the reduction process andanalyzes selection effects associated with both SAO catalog completenessand IPC target selection procedures. It is concluded that X-rayemission, at the level of Lx not less than 10 exp 30 ergs/s, is quitecommon in B stars of early spectral types (B0-B3), regardless ofluminosity class, but that emission, at the same level, becomes lesscommon, or nonexistent, in later B-type stars.

UBV photometry for southern OB stars
New UBV photometry of 1227 OB stars in the southern Milky Way ispresented. For 1113 of these stars, MK spectral types have been reportedpreviously in a comprehensive survey to B = 10.0 mag.

On the 4430 A interstellar band - A visual classification
A system of visual classification of the strength of the interstellarband 4430 A has been developed, based on spectra taken at spectralclassification dispersion. The intensity of the band was divided into 8main classes, defined by a group of selected standard stars. The systemwas applied to 1,111 southern OB stars contained in the catalog ofspectral types by Garrison, Hiltner, and Schild (1977). The mean errorin the classification was estimated to be plus or minus 1 class.Equivalent widths were measured for 100 stars; an excellent correlationwith the visual estimations was obtained. A calibration between thesetwo parameters is given.
