Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars. I. Kinematics and metallicity
Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree fieldin the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolutionechelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effectivetemperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as wellas distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants andspan typical distances from 200 pc to 800 pc to the galactic mid-plane.This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is usedto investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars. The old thindisk and thick disk populations are deconvolved from thevelocity-metallicity distribution of the sample and their parameters aredetermined. The thick disk is found to have a moderate rotational lag of-51 +/- 5 km s-1 with respect to the Sun with velocityellipsoid (sigmaU , sigmaV , sigmaW )=(63+/- 6, 39+/- 4, 39+/- 4) km s-1, mean metallicity of[Fe/H] = -0.48 +/- 0.05 and a high local normalization of 15 +/- 7%.Combining this NGP sample with a local sample of giant stars from theHipparcos catalogue, the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid isinvestigated as a function of distance to the plane and metallicity. Wefind no vertex deviation for old stars, consistent with an axisymmetricGalaxy. Paper II is devoted to the dynamical analysis of the sample,puting new constraints on the vertical force perpendicular to thegalactic plane and on the total mass density in the galactic plane.Based on observations made at the Observatoire de Haute Provence(France). Absolute proper motions for the calibration of the HIPPARCOS proper motion system
Absolute proper motions of 48 Hipparcos stars in nine fields distributedover the northern hemisphere are presented. The proper motions have beenrecently used as part of the Bonn program for the extragalactic link ofthe Hipparcos proper motion system. We describe methods which have ledto the absolute proper motions of the major part of the Bonn fields forthe link. For six fields the extragalactic calibration was achievedusing the bright quasar in the centre of the field. In addition, data ofthree fields of globular clusters were included. For these fields thelink to an extragalactic reference system was performed by stars, whoseabsolute proper motions with respect to galaxies were determined onplates of the Lick astrograph. In addition, we used for the link in onefield plates from the ESO Schmidt telescope in combination withmeasurements from glass copies of the Palomar Sky Survey. The accuracyof a single proper motion is of the order of 2 to 3 mas/a for eachcoordinate. Table 2 is also available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html}

Precise positions in the FK4 system for 120 radio source reference stars
Positions are given in the FK4 system for 120 primary reference starsgrouped around the optical counterparts of 11 extragalactic radiosources. The observations were made in 1979 and 1980 with the 6-in.transit circle of the U.S. Naval Observatory. The results reported hererepresent the first step in a three-tiered process to determineastrometric positions of the optical counterparts referred to the systemof the FK4. One application of such positions is the determination of anearly inertial optical reference frame, which eventually may becompared to a reference frame at radio wavelengths.

Meridian observations made in Brorfelde (Copenhagen University Observatory) 1975-76.
This catalogue presents positions for selected faint stars mainly fromAGK3 observed with the 7" transit circle at Brorfelde. The stars aredistributed in 43 selected areas around radio sources and are suitableas reference stars for measuring the optical counterparts to the radiosources. The obscr 'itioi cre carried out from 1975.16 to 1976.04, andevery star was observed at least two times giving a m.s.e. of "13 forthe catalogue positions given in the FK4 system. These positions usedtogether with AGK3 proper motions will in the period 1975 to 1980 have am.s.e. at the epoch ranging from `:13 to `:15, which is less than halfof what is expected when using AGK3 positions. Key words: transit circle- catalogue of positions
