Speckle observations with PISCO in Merate - III. Astrometric measurements of visual binaries in 2005 and scale calibration with a grating mask
We present relative astrometric measurements of visual binaries madeduring the first semester of 2005, with the Pupil Interferometry SpeckleCamera and Coronagraph (PISCO) at the 102-cm Zeiss telescope of theBrera Astronomical Observatory, in Merate. We performed 214 newobservations of 192 objects, with angular separations in the range0.2-4.3arcsec, and with an average accuracy of 0.01arcsec. Most of theposition angles could be determined without the usual 180°ambiguity, and their mean error is . Our sample contains orbital couplesas well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. The purpose of thislong-term programme is to improve the accuracy of the orbits andconstrain the masses of the components. For the first time with PISCO, the astrometric calibration was made witha grating mask mounted at the entrance of the telescope. The advantageof this procedure is to provide a reliable and fully independent scaledetermination. We have found two possible new triple systems: ADS 7871 and KUI 15. Wepropose a preliminary orbit for ADS 4208.

Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars. I. Kinematics and metallicity
Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree fieldin the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolutionechelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effectivetemperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as wellas distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants andspan typical distances from 200 pc to 800 pc to the galactic mid-plane.This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is usedto investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars. The old thindisk and thick disk populations are deconvolved from thevelocity-metallicity distribution of the sample and their parameters aredetermined. The thick disk is found to have a moderate rotational lag of-51 +/- 5 km s-1 with respect to the Sun with velocityellipsoid (sigmaU , sigmaV , sigmaW )=(63+/- 6, 39+/- 4, 39+/- 4) km s-1, mean metallicity of[Fe/H] = -0.48 +/- 0.05 and a high local normalization of 15 +/- 7%.Combining this NGP sample with a local sample of giant stars from theHipparcos catalogue, the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid isinvestigated as a function of distance to the plane and metallicity. Wefind no vertex deviation for old stars, consistent with an axisymmetricGalaxy. Paper II is devoted to the dynamical analysis of the sample, puting new constraints on the vertical force perpendicular to thegalactic plane and on the total mass density in the galactic plane.Based on observations made at the Observatoire de Haute Provence(France). Nice observatory measurements of double stars (3rd series)
We present recent measurements of visual double stars made at the NiceObservatory (3rd series). We also report the discovery of a new doublestar: JCT 4. Moreover we give a more precise position of the double starDOO 35. Table 1 is only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. V.
The results of 1544 speckle interferometric observations of 637 binarystars, ranging in separation from 0.25" to 5.25", are tabulated. Theseobservations were obtained using the 66 cm refractor at the US NavalObservatory in Washington, DC, with an intensified CCD detector. This isthe fifth in a series of papers presenting measures obtained with thissystem and covers the period 1998 January 1 through December 31. Randomerrors for all measures are estimated to be 17.6 mas in separation and0.55d/ρ in position angle, where ρ is the separation inarcseconds.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. IV.
The results of 1314 speckle interferometric observations of 625 binarystars, ranging in separation from 0.2" to 5.2" with a limiting secondarymagnitude of V=11, are tabulated. These observations were obtained usingthe 66 cm refractor at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, withan intensified CCD detector. This is the fourth in a series of paperspresenting measures obtained with this equipment and covers the period1997 January 1 through December 31. Random errors for all measures areestimated to be 18 mas in separation and 0.57d/rho in position angle, where rho is the separation in arcseconds.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions
A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.

Search for systematic effects in photographic measurements of visual binaries
Photographic plates (265) of selected visual double stars obtained bymeans of the 105 cm astrometric reflector of the AstronomicalObservatory of Torino have been taken during 1984. 118 visual doublestars of this series of observations (the 7th) have been measured twiceby two persons using two different measuring machines. In this paper thesingle measures of the polar coordinates for each person and the averagevalues obtained combining the two types of measures are reported. Ananalysis of the systematic errors due to the two systems of measurementand considerations about the type of motion of each binary are given.

Photographic measures of visual binaries
A fourth series of photographic measures of selected visual binaries hasbeen obtained with the astrometric reflector of the AstronomicalObservatory of Torino. This series contains 143 accurate measures of theastrometric parameters rho and theta which are the result of a criticalselection among the observations. Those having deviations from the meanrho larger than 3 sigma = 0.08 arcsec were rejected. The date ofobservation, angular separation, position angle, and number of exposuresper plate are given.

Visual multiples. VII - MK classifications
Classifications are given for 865 components of visual multiples; theyshow no systematic differences from the MK system, and the random errorsare one subclass in type and two-thirds of a luminosity class. It isfound that at least 1% of the F-type IV and V stars are weak-lined, 32%of the A4-F1 IV and V stars are Am, and 5% of the A0-A3 IV and V starsare early-type Am. Attention is called to the large fraction (55%) ofthe A3-A9 III-V stars that are of luminosity classes III or IV, unlikethe percentage (16%) at neighboring types.
