A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ˜14 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our˜63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities, complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate, however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk, the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity, corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. More advanced analyses of thisrich material will require careful simulations of the selection criteriafor the sample and the distribution of observational errors.Based on observations made with the Danish 1.5-m telescope at ESO, LaSilla, Chile, and with the Swiss 1-m telescope at Observatoire deHaute-Provence, France.Complete Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/418/989

Catalogue of Algol type binary stars
A catalogue of (411) Algol-type (semi-detached) binary stars ispresented in the form of five separate tables of information. Thecatalogue has developed from an earlier version by including more recentinformation and an improved layout. A sixth table lists (1872) candidateAlgols, about which fewer details are known at present. Some issuesrelating to the classification and interpretation of Algol-like binariesare also discussed.Catalogue is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/417/263

Spectroscopic binary orbits from photoelectric radial velocities. Paper 171: HD 152028 and HDE 284195 (GK Dra and V1094 Tau)
The two stars that form the subject of this paper are both short-perioddouble- lined eclipsing binaries having non-circular orbits despitetheir short periods. Although the HD type of HD 152028 is G0, theintegrated spectral type of the system must actually be much earlier:the B-V colour index is only about 0.37 mag and the parallax indicatesan integrated absolute magnitude as bright as +1.4 mag. A publishedphotometric investigation suggests that the primary star exhibits deltaScuti pulsations, with a period of 0.1138 days. That period is notpresent in the radial velocities, but we have identified a comparableperiodicity in the initially excessive residuals (sigma of the order of2 km/s) in the radial velocities of the primary star: there is anasymmetrical pulsational velocity curve with a semi-amplitude of about 3km/s and a period of 0.1178 days. HDE 284195 was not observed byHipparcos, but its HDE type of G0 is in reasonable agreement with itscolour and the nature of its radial-velocity traces. The rotations ofboth stars appear to be pseudo-synchronized to the orbit. The orbitalinclinations are not formally determined but they must be veryhigh, however and there is specific evidence that the inclination of HD152028 is very close to 90 degrees,so it is permissible to assume thatthe masses are scarcely above the minimum values, which in the case ofHD 152028 are 1.78 and 1.42 solar mass and in that of HDE 284195 are1.10 and 1.01 solar mass, with uncertainties below 1%.(ABRIDGED)

Symbiotic binaries. III - Flickering variability of CH Cygni: Magnetic rotator model
Rapid (flickering) and slow (UBV light curve) variability of CH Cyg in1974-1989 is analyzed. The flickering was present during all the1977-1987 active phase, and disappeared only at the time of eclipse in1985. In summer 1989, at the time of transitory increase of activity, the flickering reappeared for a few weeks. The flickering does notdistinguish any spotlike region. Observed changes of the absoluteamplitude of the flickering and the hot component brightness can beexplained in terms of the oblique magnetic rotator model. Rapid coherentoscillations with P of about 500 sec, observed during 3 nights in 1986and 1989, are probably due to rotation of the magnetic (B of about 10MG) white dwarf.

Visual multiples. VIII - 1000 MK types
A total of 1000 new classifications are given for stars brighter than B= 8.0 mag in the Aitken double star catalog. The classificationssupplement 865 classifications obtained in 1981 and 1984. Among thenewly discovered stars are 12 new Ap stars, eight Lambda Bootis stars, one Ba II star, and 60 Am stars. A detailed list of the newclassifications is given.
