The Diffuse Ionized Interstellar Medium: Structures Resulting from Ionization by O Stars

The spectral energy distribution of early-type stars. II - The extinction law towards O-type stars
Photometric measurements through different pass-bands are used todetermine the color-excess E(B-V) for O-type stars in the UV and IRspectral regions. The results are used to examine the extinctioncharacter of the stars. It is found that, in the UV, each O-type starhas its own extinction character. In general, the visual and NIRextinction in the direction of O-type stars are normal.

The spectral energy distribution of early type stars. I - A catalogue of photometric data of 259 stars from 0.15 to 4.8 microns
For the derivation of physical parameters (e.g., effective temperatureand radius) of early-type stars from their intrinsic spectral-energydistribution, and for the study of foreground interstellar and/orcircumstellar matter, a sample of 237 O, B, and A stars was chosen fromthe ANS catalog (Wesselius et al., 1982). The ANS ultraviolet and theJohnson UBV data (mostly from Nicolet's catalog, 1978) of these starswere supplemented with visual Walraven WULBV, red VRI, and near-infraredJHKLM measurements. All these data are given in the present catalog.Data for 22 stars of spectral type later than A are also included.

A catalog of selected compact radio sources for the construction of an extragalactic radio/optical reference frame
A catalog of 234 strong compact extragalactic radio sources that displayoptical counterparts is presented. This catalog identifies proposedsources for establishing an almost inertial reference frame againstwhich the motions of the earth, solar system, galactic objects, andspacecraft may be measured. This catalog also defines those sources forwhich precise optical positions should be determined in order to relatethis reference frame with the optical FK 5 fundamental system. Theaccuracy of the radio source positions of these sources is not greaterthan 0.1 arcsec with the majority not greater than 0.01 arcsec. Furtherrefinement to not greater than 0.005 arcsec by future observations isexpected soon.

Peculiar ultraviolet interstellar extinction
In connection with investigations of the physical characteristics ofinterstellar dust, a study of objects with peculiar extinction mightprovide new insights about the composition, size distribution, formation, and destruction of the particulate matter. Meyer and Savage(1981) have found that the dust toward many stars exhibits peculiar UVextinction. The present investigation is concerned with InternationalUltraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectrophotometric measurements for a sampleof stars judged by Meyer and Savage to have highly anomalous UVextinction as inferred from the broad-band Astronomical NetherlandsSatellite (ANS) data. The reported IUE measurements provide theopportunity to determine if the ANS photometry measurements of Meyer andSavage are anomalous because of peculiar extinction.

Lists of photometric AM candidates
The Geneva photometric m parameter (Nicolet and Cramer, 1982) is used inorder to select Am photometric candidates from the Rufener (1981)catalogue. Two lists are given, the first containing field stars and thesecond cluster stars. According to the photometric criteria thediffusion process probably responsible for the Am phenomenon takes placerather quickly as Am candidates are present in young clusters. It isconfirmed that the phenomenon is enhanced by low rotational velocity andhigh metallicity. The age seems to slightly affect the Am phenomenon.

The initial mass function for massive stars
A machine readable catalog of over 750 galactic O stars with publishedphotometry, spectral types, and luminosity classes has been compiled. The catalog is probably complete to a distance of about 2.5 kpc. Fromthis volume-limited data, the initial mass function (IMF) for stars moremassive than 20 solar masses has been derived. This IMF differs fromthat of Miller and Scalo (1979) and of Lequeux (1979), in havingproportionately more O type stars and not as steep a fall-off in numberof stars with increasing mass. Dividing the sample into stars inside andoutside the solar circle, a substantial difference in the IMF of themost massive stars is found. There are proportionally more toward thegalactic center. This gradient in the IMF may be related to the observedspace density of Wolf-Rayet stars, which are descendants of O typestars.

List of 333 variable, microvariable or suspected variable stars detected in the Geneva photometry
A list is presented of 333 stars, excluded from the GCVS and itssupplements, whose probability of variability ranges from high tocertain. The standard deviations observed in the V magnitude togetherwith the known spectral types, however, only allow speculation as to thetype of variable in question pending supplementary observations whichreveal the individual characteristics of these stars.

Ultraviolet interstellar extinction toward 1367 stars observed by ANS
Five-band UV photometry is used to investigate the character ofinterstellar extinction toward 1367 stars of spectral type B3 andearlier, with observations producing a galactic average of 5.11, 4.78,6.52, 4.10 and 1.95 at 1550, 1800, 2200, 2500, and 3300 A, respectively.Differences in the strengths of the UV extinction features of thesestars appear to be independent, since objects with either strong or weak2200 A extinction can have strong, normal or weak far-UV extinction.Further investigation reveals that some of the deviant stars areembedded in localized regions whose average extinction curves divergedramatically from the galactic mean. The anomalous extinction of theseregions attests to localized inhomogeneities in the UV characteristicsof interstellar dust. Because the evaluation of UV extinction toward aparticular star would be more accurate if based on the average curve ofthe region immediately surrounding that star rather than that of theentire Galaxy, it is recommended that the galactic average presented beused with caution to correct astronomical data of individual objects.

Infrared photometry of southern early-type stars
The paper presents infrared photometry tied to the JHKL (1.2-3.5microns) broadband photometric system for 229 southern early-type stars. To determine data for stars of low reddening intrinsic visual-IR colorindices were used; the E(V-K)/E(B-V) diagram was applied to evaluate theratio of total selective extinction. A mean value of R = 3.12 plus orminus 0.05 was found for stars close to the galactic plane, but a highervalue of R (about 4.0) applies to the Orion and Sco-Oph regions.Infrared two-color diagrams were used to investigate the occurrence ofinfrared excess emission in different classes of shell star; no excesseswere found for supergiants or Of stars. It is concluded that theanomalous position HD 164740 in the two-color diagrams is produced bystrong infrared excess and not by a peculiar extinction law.
