Effective temperature scale and bolometric corrections from 2MASS photometry
We present a method to determine effective temperatures, angularsemi-diameters and bolometric corrections for population I and II FGKtype stars based on V and 2MASS IR photometry. Accurate calibration isaccomplished by using a sample of solar analogues, whose averagetemperature is assumed to be equal to the solar effective temperature of5777 K. By taking into account all possible sources of error we estimateassociated uncertainties to better than 1% in effective temperature andin the range 1.0-2.5% in angular semi-diameter for unreddened stars.Comparison of our new temperatures with other determinations extractedfrom the literature indicates, in general, remarkably good agreement. These results suggest that the effective temperaure scale of FGK starsis currently established with an accuracy better than 0.5%-1%. Theapplication of the method to a sample of 10 999 dwarfs in the Hipparcoscatalogue allows us to define temperature and bolometric correction (Kband) calibrations as a function of (V-K), [m/H] and log g. Bolometriccorrections in the V and K bands as a function of T_eff, [m/H] and log gare also given. We provide effective temperatures, angularsemi-diameters, radii and bolometric corrections in the V and K bandsfor the 10 999 FGK stars in our sample with the correspondinguncertainties.

Faint Blue Objects at High Galactic Latitude. VIII. Performance Characteristics of the US Survey
The US survey has cataloged 3987 objects in seven high Galactic latitudefields according to their optical colors, magnitudes, and morphologiesusing photographic techniques. This paper analyzes the effectiveness ofthe survey at producing finding lists for complete samples of hot starsand quasars that exhibit blue and/or ultraviolet excess (B-UVX) relativeto the colors of halo F and G subdwarf stars. A table of 599spectroscopic identifications summarizes the spectroscopic coverage ofthe US objects that has been accomplished to date. In addition, some ofthe survey plates have been reexamined for objects missed during theoriginal selection, and the literature has been searched for all otherspectroscopically identified blue stars and quasars with z<2.2 thathave been selected by other surveys within the US survey areas. Theseresults are used to estimate empirically both the accuracy of the USsurvey selection boundaries (in color, morphology, and brightness) andthe completeness of the resulting samples of B-UVX US objects withinthose boundaries. In particular, it is shown that the reliability of theUS color classifications is high and that the previously derived USmorphological boundary for the complete selection of unresolved quasarsis accurate. The contribution of color and morphological classificationerrors to B-UVX sample incompleteness is therefore correspondinglysmall. The empirical tests indicate high levels of completeness(95+1-2%) for the samples of US quasars and hotstars isolated within the stated survey selection limits. Errata andimprovements to some of the published catalog data are presented inAppendices.

Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

HIPPARCOS age-metallicity relation of the solar neighbourhood disc stars
We derive age-metallicity relations (AMRs) and orbital parameters forthe 1658 solar neighbourhood stars to which accurate distances aremeasured by the HIPPARCOS satellite. The sample stars comprise 1382 thindisc stars, 229 thick disc stars, and 47 halo stars according to theirorbital parameters. We find a considerable scatter for thin disc AMRalong the one-zone Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model. Orbits andmetallicities of thin disc stars show now clear relation each other. Thescatter along the AMR exists even if the stars with the same orbits areselected. We examine simple extension of one-zone GCE models whichaccount for inhomogeneity in the effective yield and inhomogeneous starformation rate in the Galaxy. Both extensions of the one-zone GCE modelcannot account for the scatter in age - [Fe/H] - [Ca/Fe] relationsimultaneously. We conclude, therefore, that the scatter along the thindisc AMR is an essential feature in the formation and evolution of theGalaxy. The AMR for thick disc stars shows that the star formationterminated 8 Gyr ago in the thick disc. As already reported by Grattonet al. (\cite{Gratton_et.al.2000}) and Prochaska et al.(\cite{Prochaska_et.al.2000}), thick disc stars are more Ca-rich thanthin disc stars with the same [Fe/H]. We find that thick disc stars showa vertical abundance gradient. These three facts, the AMR, verticalgradient, and [Ca/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation, support monolithic collapseand/or accretion of satellite dwarf galaxies as likely thick discformation scenarios. GPM1 - a catalog of absolute proper motions of stars with respect to galaxies
The description of the first version of the General Compiled Catalogueof Absolute Proper Motions (GPM1) for a sample of HIPPARCOS stars, derived with respect to galaxies within the plan called Catalogue ofFaint Stars (KSZ, Deutch 1952), is presented. The principal aim of theGPM1 construction was to provide absolute proper motions of stars todetermine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS system. The GPM1 cataloguecontains 977 HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue stars with V magnitudes $5^m -11^m in 180 fields north of -25 degrees of declination. The accuracy ofthe proper motions is 8 mas/yr (milliarcseconds per year). Comparison ofproper motions of GPM1 with those of the PPM and ACRS was performed andanalyzed with respect to systematic errors caused by spurious rotationof the FK5 system. The standard errors show that the rotation may bedetermined with an accuracy better than 1 mas/yr. Catalog is onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftpcdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or ftp 130.79.128.5.

Vilnius Photometry of Stars in the Area of SA 57
Interstellar reddening, as a function of distance in the direction ofthe North Galactic Pole (SA 57), is determined using the two-dimensionalclassification of 63 stars observed in the Vilnius photometric system. The average value of A_V calculated for the stars up to 800 pc distanceis close to zero (the mean value is A_V=0.01 mag) with a standarddeviation of the order of sigma =+/- 0.1 mag. This dispersion of pointsis exactly what is expected from the errors of measurement andclassification.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Performance of Commercial CCD Cameras When Coupled to Small Telescopes (3-12 inch)
CCDs have had a revolutionary effect on large, mountain-top astronomy(40-to 160-inch telescopes), and, more recently, on smaller, urban andsuburban university astronomy research (12- to 200-inch telescopes). This paper explores the theoretical capabilities of a range of CCDcameras and sites and compares them to actual results using 3- to12-inch telescopes. The detection of stars to 16th and 21st magnitudeswith these instruments with signal-to-noise ratios of 3 to 10 isdocumented. The conclusion is that amateur astronomers with 3-inchtelescopes and CCD cameras from suburban sites can make valuablecontributions to AAVSO programs.

A search for wide binaries at the north galactic pole using precise radial velocities
Precise radial velocities are presented from a survey of 247 starscentered on Selected Area 57 at the North Galactic Pole, complete forlate-type stars with V magnitude brighter than 12.0. The radialvelocities have a typical precision of 0.2-0.3 km/s. New spectral typesand distances estimates are presented for 120 of the stars in thesample. All pairs of stars with angular separations between 1 and 600arcsec have been considered, and 11 candidate pairs found with velocitydifferences less than 1.5 km/s. It is estimated that 4 or 5 of the 11candidate pairs are actually bound binaries, but none with separationslarger than 0.1 pc. The constraints imposed by these results on theactual distribution of wide binaries in the Galaxy should now bereanalyzed. The unusual precision of the velocities led to the discoveryof a new cluster associated with the multiple system ADS 8811 ABC.

Four-color and H-beta photometry near SA 57
Stromgren uvby and H-beta photometry has been obtained for 37 stars inand near the region of SA 57, the Selected Area nearest the northgalactic pole. These stars can serve as secondary standards forphotometric work in this region. Comparisons with previous photometryshows reasonable agreement. The data are analyzed to determineinterstellar reddening, metal abundances of the F-type stars, anddistances. On the average, the stars are somewhat weak lined, comparedto the sun. The reddening is close to zero.

U, V, W velocity components for the old disk using radial velocities of 1295 stars in the three cardinal Galactic directions
New radial velocities are presented for 1295 stars chosen at random nearthe three cardinal Galactic directions of l = 180 deg, b = 0; l = 90deg, b = 0 deg; and b = 90 deg, giving the distribution in U, V, and W,respectively, from the radial velocities alone. The measurements weremade with the coude spectrograph of the Mount Wilson 100 in. Hookerreflector. The purpose of the program is to set limits on the densitynormalization in the solar neighborhood of the old thin disk, the oldthick disk, and the halo. Many more high-velocity stars are present inthe unbiased sample than expected from previous estimates of thenormalization. The data suggest the density ratios in the solarneighborhood to be about 90 percent, 10 percent, and about 0.5 percentfor the thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations, respectively.
