Infrared L'band (lambda-cen- ~3.9 mu-m) observations with TIFR near-infrared camera (TIRCAM).
TIRCAM is based on the SBRC InSb Focal Plane Array (58 x 62 pixels)sensitive between 1- 5 μm. TIRCAM system is described in Ojha et al.(2002). TIRCAM had its first light observations during March-April 2001from Gurusikhar 1.2m PRL telescope at Mt. Abu. After having thesuccessful first run in 2001, the TIRCAM was used for the L bandobservations of a few scientific targets in combination with freshtelescope mirrors in Nov. 2002 &Jan. 2003 (the aluminising operationof the primary &secondary mirrors of 1.2m telescope was carried outin mid 2002). Several at 3.9 μm. We could detect the stars upto ~ 7mag in L band from the Gurusikhar site. The TIRCAM L mag of detectedstars in Trapezium cluster were compared with the L band (3.5 μm)data of Muench et al. (2002). These measurements are in good agreementwith each other considering the two different center wavelengths. Weplan to explore TIRCAM's performance in the broad L (3.5 μm) &M(4.5 μm) bands from Hanle site in near future.

Statistics of spectroscopic sub-systems in visual multiple stars
A large sample of visual multiples of spectral types F5-M has beensurveyed for the presence of spectroscopic sub-systems. Some 4200 radialvelocities of 574 components were measured in 1994-2000 with thecorrelation radial velocity meter. A total of 46 new spectroscopicorbits were computed for this sample. Physical relations are establishedfor most of the visual systems and several optical components areidentified as well. The period distribution of sub-systems has a maximumat periods from 2 to 7 days, likely explained by a combination of tidaldissipation with triple-star dynamics. The fraction of spectroscopicsub-systems among the dwarf components of close visual binaries withknown orbits is similar to that of field dwarfs, from 11% to 18% percomponent. Sub-systems are more frequent among the components of widevisual binaries and among wide tertiary components to the known visualor spectroscopic binaries - 20% and 30%, respectively. In triple systemswith both outer (visual) and inner (spectroscopic) orbits known, we findan anti-correlation between the periods of inner sub-systems and theeccentricities of outer orbits which must be related to dynamicalstability constraints. Spectral and luminosity classification for the cool components in symbiotic stars
The near infrared spectra of 12 S-type symbiotic stars and 78 comparisonstars have been observed with moderate dispersion in five runs from 1992to 1997, the resolving power being R= (lambda )/(Delta lambda )>2000,with a signal to noise ratio S/N>100. The triple-headed absorptionband of TiO (lambda lambda 8432, 8422 and 8452 Ä) emerges when astar is later than M2, and the depth of the TiO absorption band is verysensitive to the spectral type (ST) and insensitive to the luminosityclass of the star. We fit a curve of spectral type against the index ofthe absorption depth of this band with a standard deviation sigma =0.37of a subdivision of one spectral type. The IR CaII triplet (lambdalambda 8498, 8542, 8662 Ä ), Fe I 8689 Ä, and Fe I 8675 Äare good luminosity indicators although the equivalent widths (EWs) ofthese lines clearly decrease for a star later than M3. When the star isa supergiant, the lines have a smaller central residual intensity andbroader wings than in the case of a normal giant. The Ca II 8662 Ä/Fe I 8675 Ä and Fe I 8689 Ä /Fe I 8675 Ä ratios are alsogood luminosity indicators for K-type giants. The latter is particularlyuseful when there are abundance anomalies. The metal-poor symbiotic starAG Dra is classified as a Ib or II giant, as is TX CVn, on the basis ofFe I 8689 Ä /Fe I 8675 Ä. 9 other symbiotic stars containingM-type cool components are classified as giants by direct comparison andquantitative analysis. Due to there being no known good ratio indicatorof luminosity for M-type stars in the band studied and because there isno metal abundance data for the symbiotic stars studied by us except forAG Dra, the results for these 9 symbiotic stars are only preliminary.The infrared Ca II triplet of most symbiotic stars clearly variesbetween the different observing runs. The different luminosity classesgiven to the same symbiotic star are probably caused by the variabilityof the lines of ionized elements, while in some cases they are affectedby a low metal abundance.

A catalog of rotational and radial velocities for evolved stars
Rotational and radial velocities have been measured for about 2000evolved stars of luminosity classes IV, III, II and Ib covering thespectral region F, G and K. The survey was carried out with the CORAVELspectrometer. The precision for the radial velocities is better than0.30 km s-1, whereas for the rotational velocity measurementsthe uncertainties are typically 1.0 km s-1 for subgiants andgiants and 2.0 km s-1 for class II giants and Ib supergiants.These data will add constraints to studies of the rotational behaviourof evolved stars as well as solid informations concerning the presenceof external rotational brakes, tidal interactions in evolved binarysystems and on the link between rotation, chemical abundance and stellaractivity. In this paper we present the rotational velocity v sin i andthe mean radial velocity for the stars of luminosity classes IV, III andII. Based on observations collected at the Haute--Provence Observatory,Saint--Michel, France and at the European Southern Observatory, LaSilla, Chile. New spectroscopic components in 8 multiple systems
New close sub-systems are discovered in 8 visual late-type double stars.Elements of spectroscopic orbits (4 double-lined and 4 single-lined) aregiven for the components of quadruple systems ADS 1134 and 11163, forthe components of triple systems ADS 455, 497, 5436, 8236, 10044, andfor the primary of the optical pair ADS 9444. Magnitudes, colors,spectral types, masses of individual components are estimated bycombining all available data with Hipparcos parallaxes. Among thesestellar systems we note a subdwarf triple ADS 497, an old system withsubgiant components ADS 10044, and a visual triple ADS 11163 withadditional very low mass (possibly substellar) spectroscopic companionin a 4.6 day orbit. The astrometric orbit of ADS 8236B with a semimajoraxis of 30 mas and a period of 4.6 yr may be recoverable from Hipparcosdata. Infrared study of the two categories of S stars
Photometric observations of 20 Tc-deficient and 24 Tc-rich S stars inthe near infrared are presented in this paper. With the IRAS data,infrared two color diagrams, IRAS low-resolution spectra and energydistributions are discussed to summarize the way to segregate Tc-richstars from Tc-deficient ones.

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions
A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.

An uvby-beta catalogue of F0-K0 supergiant stars brighter than V = 6.5
Photoelectric uvby-beta photometry is reported for 111 F0-K0 supergiantstars which are brighter than V = 6.5 mag and located betweendeclination of -15 and +61 deg. A comparison with previous observationsis made. A few stars which are suspected to present light variations arementioned.

On the mass-radius relation of late M dwarfs
An attempt is made to rederive an empirical mass-radius relation formain-sequence stars less massive than 0.5 solar mass. Near-infraredphotometry (JHK bands) was obtained on about 40 nearby (all with greaterthan 0.04 arcsec) low-mass taken from the Gliese catalogs. From thesedata and from previously published UBVRI magnitudes, effectivetemperatures are determined in the standard manner, by fitting blackbodyenergy distributions to the observed fluxes while allowing for line andband blocking below 1 micron. Together with the known distances, thesetemperatures and fluxes allow estimates of the radii and luminosities ofthese stars. Invoking a theoretical mass-luminosity relation, the massesof the stars can then be derived. A comparison of the resultantempirical mass-radius relation with a recent theoretical relation showsthat the discrepancy is now about 10 percent, significantly better thanthe 20-25 percent obtained a decade ago.

Six centimetre VLA radio survey of compact planetary nebulae
The results are presented of a radio continuum survey of 174 objectsclassified as possible or true planetary nebulae (Acker et al, 1983).Intensity contour plots, radio flux densities at 5 GHz, diameters, andaccurate positions are presented for the detected objects. Many of thedetected sources have high radio surface brightness temperaturesindicative of young planetary nebulae. Also, for each of the programsources, the IRAS Point Source Catalog is used to extract the fourphotometric flux densities and derive the total infrared flux, a dusttemperature, and the infrared excess.

E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984
Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

Visual multiples. VIII - 1000 MK types
A total of 1000 new classifications are given for stars brighter than B= 8.0 mag in the Aitken double star catalog. The classificationssupplement 865 classifications obtained in 1981 and 1984. Among thenewly discovered stars are 12 new Ap stars, eight Lambda Bootis stars,one Ba II star, and 60 Am stars. A detailed list of the newclassifications is given.

The astronomical use of a CCD device in a cinematographic mode
The performance of a CCD camera used in a new mode, 'cine-CCD', isdiscussed. Some astronomical applications are proposed such as staroccultation or the increase of spatial resolution in small field imageryfor long exposure time. A resolution gain of about 1.5 could beachievable by using an image selection procedure. For an hour equivalentexposure on a 3.6 m telescope the limiting magnitude should be 24.

New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants
A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars.These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.

Infrared spectroscopy of symbiotic stars and the nature of their cool components
Low-resolution 2-4 micron spectroscopy of a small sample of symbioticstars is presented, in an effort to determine if the giant components ofthese systems fill their Roche Lobes. A (2.35)-(2.2) color indexmeasures the strength of the CO absorption band and provides a usefuldiscriminant of luminosity class among single M-type giants whichseparates normal giants from supergiants at the same spectral type.Although interpretation of symbiotic spectra is complicated somewhat bytheir binary nature, the results suggest the late-type components inthese systems range from normal red giants to bright asymptotic giants.The possible presence of non-Roche Lobe filling, low-luminosity giantsin some symbiotic stars cannot be understood within the framework ofexisting theories for these interesting objects, and thus may provideimportant information for understanding mass transfer in binary systems.

Masses of red giants. I - Mean initial mass from visual binary data
Existing information on red-giant masses is reviewed, and an independentmethod for determining the frequency distribution of initial masses ofred giants is presented which is based on analysis of visual binarysystems containing a red giant and a main-sequence star (RG-MS systems).A list of RG-MS systems is compiled which yields an apparent frequencydistribution of the spectral types of the secondaries. This apparentdistribution is transformed to a 'true' distribution of secondary massesby accounting for certain selection effects; the true distribution isthen transformed into a distribution of initial primary masses (i.e.,initial masses of red-giant components) by assuming a form for thedistribution of mass ratios. Values in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 solarmasses and an upper limit of 1.4 solar masses are determined for themean initial masses of red giants and shown to be in satisfactoryagreement with the theoretical prediction of about 1 solar mass.

Photometric studies of composite stellar systems. I - CO and JHK observations of E and S0 galaxies
Multiaperture infrared photometric observations of the central regionsof 51 early-type galaxies and of the integrated light of five globularclusters are presented. These data are compared with selected opticalobservations and with various model predictions. The main results of thework are: (1) the observed parameters for the brighter galaxies,particularly the CO index and the V-K color, agree with the predictionsof stellar synthesis models characterized by giant-dominated populationswith mass/visual luminosity ratios less than 10; (2) the galaxianbroad-band colors tend to redden with increasing luminosity anddecreasing aperture size; (3) for the globular clusters, there isevidence that the integrated colors become redder with increasingmetallicity; and (4) in bright galaxies the relative changes of U-V,V-J, and J-K as functions of radius may differ from the relative changesas functions of luminosity at a fixed radius.
